Yesterday my 4.5 month old Pekin layed an egg! Actually she layed 2...is that weird? It was her first time, my husband accidentally snuck up on her as she was hiding in an overturned bucket and when she ran out he saw a big white egg in there. She is in with our chickens, whove also been laying for a week now- they're brown eggers though. As soon as she came out, before my dh could stop them the chickens all swarmed in on her egg and devoured it, they did not care about us trying to stop them, they were hell bent on eating it and fighting like crazy over it!
The shell was really soft, maybe because it's her first try? Anyhow, funny thing is, a few hours later we were in there again and saw her go off in a corner, she waddled out a few minutes later and the chickens went nuts again- she layed another egg!!?? We could not save it before the chickens polished it off. Man, I thought they went crazy over grapes- this was insane!! They've never touched each others eggs, but in case it was setting them up for a bad habit, I've moved the duck in to another cage, I certainly don't want them developing a taste for fresh eggs!
So, do you eat duck eggs? What are they like? We just got her for fun, as a pet, and she loves being with the chickens, she is in charge, bosses them around, but she's nice about it.
