strange beta levels question

Hi everyone! I used to frequent this board but it has been awhile. I have a friend who recently got pregnant, but has had some strange beta levels and a tiny bit of spotting. She may be having a miscarriage (or missed miscarriage?) or maybe everything is okay? She had one early miscarriage in the past and this is her first pregnancy since.

Here are her levels:
15 DPO 146
17 DPO 469
19 DPO slight spotting this day and next day
20 DPO 706
22 DPO 721
24 DPO 1732

Looks like her numbers were rising great at first, then slowed, pretty much plateued but are now doubling again? What could cause this? Is there any hope? Her doc said he was "concerned" but there was "nothing that could be done" on day 22 DPO. Her cervix was closed - ultrasound didn't show anything but the doc said it was too early. He also said it wasn't a tubal pregnancy. Then when she had the beta on day 24 DPO and the levels had risen, she got a call from the nurse who told her that her doctor was really pleased with the number and not to worry. So my friend doesn't know what to think.... any ideas?

No clue but Ive seen it happen a lot.

Some people think its a sign that the pregnancy started out as twins but one twin was lost. Others think that the body was very close to miscarrying but something in itself stopped it.

I personally almost would assume that the 22dpo test was just wrong. the rise is normal other than that one test.

The other thing it could be is a lab error. Also, blighted ovums tend to have weird numbers - those were the 2 things I thought of.
