Struggling with babywearing, what to try next?

DS is nearly 8 weeks, just over 11 pounds, and loves to be held all the time (sometimes I can put him down for naps, but not always). I am 5'4" and usually wear XS (0-2).

When I hold him in my arms, he loves to be against my chest, high enough to peek over my shoulder or rest his head against my shoulder if he is tired. Interestingly, he hates it if DH holds him in that position. He swallows a lot of air when nursing so needs frequent burping during nursing and prefers to stay upright when not nursing. He gets very upset when he wets himself and typically we have 2-3 diaper changes after nursing (we are starting to try EC). He also gets quite warm so we have to watch out for overheating even in 70-degree weather, although he is fine being held while swaddled in an A&A muslin blanket.

I have a linen ring sling (Soul Baby NYC, bought used), a Mei Tai (Mei Tai Baby Zippy, bought used), and 2 adjustable hotslings (a slight mistake with my baby registry).

RS: I really like the idea of the RS (easily nurse, use the tail as cover if necessary, pop him in and out) but it's just not been working out for us. I can nurse him in it in cradle position when he is really hungry, but that's it. Otherwise he needs to be upright, definitely doesn't want his feet in, and feet out is really uncomfortable for him right now (I think he's a little small for it). I have a hard time getting it adjusted right in the first place, plus when I take him out of the RS, it moves around and I can't easily get it adjusted again when I try to put him back in. Also I think the shoulder may be too wide for me, when I move my arm around (even just trying to put him in the sling) it pulls on the rail which he doesn't like. I've practiced a lot, watched several videos, and got some help at a local babywearing support group, but he still screams bloody murder most of the time.

MT: We can cinch up the bottom on the MT so he can be feet out. He's ok with this position but doesn't love it, so it only really works for us for outdoor walks when he's distracted, or when he's exhausted and falls asleep. I am short and can't easily nurse in it. I can't sit down or squat (to put leashes on my dogs, feed them, etc) without my legs bumping into his which upsets him. However my biggest problem is that it is a pain to take him in and out frequently and walk around with dangling straps. I love how easy it is to get comfortable, and it works pretty well for outdoor walks, but is impractical for use around the house.

Hotslings AP: Unfortunately these are too big for me, so I haven't tried him in them.

I really want to get babywearing to work, as I am very limited in what I can do carrying him in my arms, and it's also starting to hurt my wrists. I'm just not sure what to try next. A different style RS? A properly fitting pouch? A stretchy wrap? For a wrap, I'm concerned about him overheating in something like a Moby or Sleepy wrap, so was looking at the Wrapsody/Gypsy Mama Bali Baby Stretch. I'm also worried about the learning curve. I like how easy a pouch looks but understand it can be hard to get a good fit.

I'd appreciate any advice!

I'd either custom make your own MT, if you sew, to make it much shorter & narrower. I made a couple newborn MT's & really liked them.

Or, get a wrap. A basic front cross carry is pretty easy to pick up. If you're really worried about over heating, go with one of the Gypsy Mama gauze wraps. Gauze is a bit more likely to have pressure points than the stretchy wraps, but your baby is small enough it shouldn't be too bad. I used a gauze for my first real wrap for my July baby & it was really nice

Wraps, especially stretch wraps, are great for that size/age. You will probably have to take your LO out to nurse, but you can do that while leaving the wrap on and just re-tightening as needed without removing the whole wrap. You can also put on a stretch wrap before leaving the house so that you aren't having to tie it in a parking lot.

One thing though, if you are really petite, you might find the stretch wraps to be really long on you since they are one size fits all kind of thing. You can either just wrap the extra around you if you don't mind it, or cut it down to be shorter. Another option is to make your own. Some people just buy a stretch jersey from the fabric store, cut it length wise down the center, and then you have two identical stretch wraps. Just make sure it isn't too stretchy if you go this route.

If you don't think you want to deal with wrapping, you could try to find a SSC that works for little babies. Both the Beco Butterfly II and Olives and Applesauce come with infant inserts. APLX (AngelPack LX) carriers are a favorite among petite mamas, but there is no insert and some people have been able to use them with their little babies and some have not. It kind of depends on the particular baby. That might be a really good option for you down the road though if you don't want to be dealing with the straps of a mei tai.

Not sure if that helps or not. Keep trying, you'll find something! Good luck!

Thanks mamas!

I went ahead and ordered the GMBBS stretchy wrap...weather is getting cooler and I am always cold myself, so hopefully it will be fine for us. Fingers crossed I can figure out how to use it (the DVD should help).

And I got a used RS of a different style to try out. Although he wasn't thrilled about it, it was way easier for me to adjust and get him in. I'm hoping it will get better as he gets a little older and we can use other positions.

If the wrap doesn't work out, I will look at SSCs to try to find something that fits us. Meanwhile we are still using the MT every day for walks and he is getting a bit more used to it.

You will love your wrap...so nice for that age.

Since your baby likes the burp position, you can try a burp hold. This video uses a woven wrap but I assume you can use a stretchy one as well - I have no experience with stretchy ones myself. It's basically a Front Cross Carry (FCC) just tied higher and to the side a bit and you wouldn't have to froggy baby's legs if your ds won't tolerate it anymore.

I really like all the wrapping instructional videos by wrapyourbaby on youtube. They helped me learn lots of different carries.

Congrats on your new addition!

Thanks!

My wrap arrived this afternoon and I think we have a newfound love for it. I tried it for a couple of hours this evening, using the burp position. I pre-tied the wrap on me and it was so quick to pop him in and out every time, and he didn't mind having his legs froggied for once, and it was like he didn't even notice he was going in a carrier. My dogs were also thrilled that they didn't have to wait for him to nap to get some attention from me.

However, not so impressed with the DVD that came with it. It seemed pretty comprehensive, but the pace was like someone pressed the fast forward button. It was hard to learn from, I guess I will use other videos.

We are leaving tomorrow on a weekend trip to go to a wedding, I'm really glad I got this beforehand.

Thanks again everyone for your input.
