should I be using more than water on my wipes?

I'm using homemade cloth wipes, half terry, half flannel. My DD (age almost 2.5) is complaining sometimes that it hurts when she pees. She is also working on potty training and so her wiping is not always the best obviously, I help, but she doesn't make it as easy as when she's on the changing table. I do use disposable ones when she poops to make sure it's super clean. Short of going back to all the disposable ones should I be doing something different with the wipes?

I'm using just water for wiping pee, given that we just used toilet paper and all as adults and that works for us? I'm washing with my diapers in Charlie's soap (one rinse, one hot with detergent, one hot without). Does it need something stronger with the wipes? They don't tend to sit more than a day just sitting in clean water, if that even.

I'm also nursing and 36 weeks pregnant, so I don't know if the colostrum is just making things different with her poop too and that's the problem?

I always used just plain water for pee changes.
I don't think it's unusual for pee to burn, esp as they get older and eat a variety of solids. Maybe you could try limiting acidic foods such as strawberries and tomatoes or think about whether your DD could have a food allergy.
I would also rinse out the store wipes before using in case something in the wipes could be irritating her skin. A drop of olive oil on the rinsed-out store wipes works just as well to remove sticky poo.
Finally I think it's great you're potty training since in my experience this was the only way to get rid of diaper rash for good. The sooner you can ditch the diapers the better, even if it is just for a few hours at home, at first.

Our DS had severe diaper rash although we aired him out and use mainly cloth wipes (same as you, we use conventional wipes for poop, but follow with cloth wipes) when he was little. I then read about adding a little bit of vinegar to the water and has since had very few problems (unless he has a day of lots of bms...anybody's bottom would be red!). We put a little vinegar in the bottom of a juice jug and fill with water, then refill our little go to water bowl in the changing table when it's empty. Works for us, hope it can work for you!

Have you had her checked out to see if she has a UTI! If you are potty training she might be holding her pee sometimes and that can cause a UTI! Painful urination is a common sign of UTI!

The painful urination is only occasionally, not even every time in the potty. Thanks for the idea though.
