alternatives to buying newborn size covers?

I was thinking of buying size 1 covers (fleece) and just adding an extra row of snaps in the rise with my snap press so that I could use them on my newborn.
(I plan to use pad folded mulsins and prefolds so no issue there with the sizing.)

Does anybody think this will work? Or do I need to pay for a set of covers that will only last a couple of months? With DD, it seems that she outgrew the newborn size really fast. Unfortunately this time round we're expecting a boy and I bought all pink covers last time...

I'm not normally overhere, I was looking for ideas myself.

I think the snap idea could work. Or maybe you could dye the pink covers red? Or just put pants over them...

I just cut a piece of fleece into a rectangle and tied it on for my dd when she was a newborn. She wore a lot of blue, because she followed my son, and he wore plenty of pink because all his hand-me-downs came from girls.

what's wrong with pink? it's just a colour. if i had no covers at all, i'd buy new newborn sizes or mess around with size 1 covers, but pink for a boy newborn? you said yourself, they grow out of that size really quickly!

Thanks for your suggestions!

Seraf, I am really interested in how you got a rectangle of fleece to fit as a diaper cover? Is there folding/ pinning involved? I'd love more details....

As for the pink covers, there are only 2, and I thought I would just put them on the bottom of the pile and use them in an emergency, whenever there was newborn poo covering all the others... (There were so many of those times with DD, I don't think you can have enough diaper covers with a newborn hehe.) And not really use them when other people (including DH) might see...

Would love to try my hand at dying but I'm afraid I would turn the whole bathroom red...and we only rent...

For some reason my email didn't tell me you replied.

Smart only turning the bathroom red, I always dye in the kitchen...

A rectangle of fleece from a blanket or jacket from the thrift store. I actually take a water bottle in the store with me to discretely check for waterproof fleece. I was never a pin or snappy kind of girl, just tri-fold or angel-wing prefold (or flat folded in the same general shape). So I would take some kind of tie (usually another stip of fleece, it's stretchy, tho), then lay down fleece that was wide enough that the tie wouldn't touch the baby, then I'd lay in the diaper. Baby on top, diaper up through legs, then fleece jelly-rolled in and up to cover diaper or I would just pull the sides to the middle like the angel-wing fold and keep it wider than the diaper itself. Then sides up and tie. Tuck in any extra in the front

I was a frequent changer, so I never tested the limits of my cover, and I only used them when she was immobile.

I think that would work with the snap press.

I had PUL Thirsties Duos that fit from newborn (8lbs8oz) until 5 months. So if you got a few of those they should last awhile.

Thanks, I think I get it. I've got some spare fleece and may give this a try!

I dye all sorts of stuff in my kitchen (and I rent too) and if your sink is stainless you won't have any problem. However if your covers are made out of PUL dying them won't work anyways (since the dye has to penetrate the fabric in order to do its job).
