Please tell me about Unisom

Hi! I'm sure there is a thread somewhere like this already, but I'm new here, and I need to know!

I have taken phenergan successfully in the past, but we're hoping to have a midwife this time AND we are not on insurance right now, so the over-the-counter-ness of Unisom sounds nice...

That being said, anyone have experience with it? Have you been told it is safe? Is it effective?

We found an article that said it was taken off the market in 1983 because it was thought to have caused some birth defects, but that since then that has been disproved. Also, it is still available in Canada with the B6 added? Interesting...

Let me know!

I've been taking it my entire pregnancy and it has been a lifesaver. For me it works better than Zofran most of the time.

My research showed that it was voluntarily taken off the market by the manufacturer due to a lawsuit, not due to any study that showed a correlation with birth defects. I don't believe there are any studies that have raised any concerns and millions of pregnant women take it. No medication is known for certain to be 100% safe during pregnancy but I felt comfortable taking the Unisom based on my research.

It made me sleepy at first but then I built up a tolerance and it no longer made me sleepy. I could take it during the day. I've had 9 months of morning sickness and would not have survived this pregnancy without it.

I believe it is the only class A drug approved for morning sickness

count me in for Unisom!
Yep, it's safe for pregnancy. For me, Zofran actually had one big side effect: nausea!! It made my nausea SO much worse. I am 33 weeks and still take it pretty often. It does not make me drowsy at all, but I am like a horse when it comes to medicine, it never knocks me out!

Maybe a silly question, but... I've heard of taking Unisom before, but I don't see how it wouldn't make you sleepy?? I've always been VERY sensitive to any kind of sleep aids. And since I've been so tired anyway, there was no way I was going to attempt Unisom! How long would it take your body to "build up a tolerance"?

I started at around 6 weeks and took it until 13 weeks (I took zofran last time). I still did throw up a few times, but I started taking it because throwing up 5-6 times a day was really starting to take it's toll. So throwing up once a week and just being nauseated in the evenings was a good compromise. I stopped at 13 weeks because I didn't want to be on it all pregnancy, I've only started to feel "good" in the past week (I'm almost 17 weeks).
