Would you cut out solids temporarily in this case

I need some thoughts on an issue with my 9 month old. We bagan feeding him "solids" about 3 weeks ago. We tried sweet potato puree, mashed up banana, peas, and pears over the course of that time following the try something and wait a few days model.

Everything was going fine. I take a pretty relaxed approach to feeding him since I know there is no real need for it. He nurses a lot. I don't keep track of nursing but I would say he never even goes three hours between nursing.

He was pooping similiar to his bf poops once or twice a day but now with a slightly thicker texture. Last week he went 6 days with out a poop. I did some reading on the issue and started feeding him prunes.

Then he began what I would describe as preview poops. Small, the consistancy of peanut butter, a few times a day that were clearly not the full poop. Then he pooped a huge poop that I would say was a constipated poop. The next day he went back to the "prieview" pooping.

So, my question is should I view this as a sign he is not ready for food or this just a big transition for his body. He has teeth, sits, stand, and crawls. He really loves eating but I don't want to rush his body.

I was just coming on here to post a similar type of question about my 6 month old. I don't have any expert advice for you but just personal opinion. I think 9 months is plenty old enough for solids.
I am starting solids with my 6 month old (for about 2 wks so far) and he is having an adjustment in his poops too! I think it would happen at whatever age- I will post my question on another thread. ALl I can say is make sure you can also give him water to help with the solids. I am gonna ask my pediatrician about this though- my ds is more constipated since I gave him solids and we don't even do solids every day.

for just about every baby I know there is an adjustment period when starting solids that usually includes constipation. Try to stick with foods like pears, plums, prunes, etc. for a while.

Your baby's body is learning how to do something new. It will have an adjustment time. We did BLW, so our babe got tons of new a different foods pretty much right away. If I felt she was constipated, I gave her a spoonful or two of prunes for 2 days until she went back to normal. But it was a new normal.

Unless you feel your baby isn't feeling well, I'd say he's doing fine.

Sounds totally normal to me. Your baby's body has to get used to digesting new stuff. It doesn't matter when you start-- there will be an adjustment period.

HTH.

I'd cut out the bananas temporarily, but not stop solids entirely. Bananas can be very constipating. Also, are you giving him any water to go with the solids? Solids are harder on the kidneys than BM, so a little extra water will help him process them. It may also help with the constipation.

Prunes and apple juice always worked to get my DD going when she was constipated!

Thanks mamas. I have cut out bananas and I will offer water more often.

I definitely agree with water. I have found our LO gets constipated if he doesnt get enough water.

My DD had poop issues when we started solids at around 7 mo. She pooped 1x per day before solids, after we started she would poop 7-8x per day (poor thing!) to 1x per week! This was NOT related to whether we were doing the constipating foods (apple sauce, banana, potato, sweet potato, carrots, rice) or loosening foods (pears, prunes, peaches, peas), so I think it was just her gut trying to make sense of the new foods coming in. I swear at one point, all she was getting was a few spoonfuls of prune baby food & she was still constipated for days! We went off solids for 1-2 weeks (just nursed), then came back to solids, and she was much better & regular.
