But...she LOVES that chair!!!

My LO has recently started sitting up on her own. Her beloved bouncy chair has a safety warning that it shouldn't be used by a baby who can sit up. While I understand the risk of her toppling right out by sitting up in the chair, I also really hate to take the chair away. She LOVES bouncing in it, loves that she can look right up into my eyes while lounging in it, and will sleep in it for hours when she won't sleep anywhere else at night. I don't foresee use losing the need for a nice soft reclining seat for her anytime soon. How old is really too old for the bouncy seat? Is there something made for older babies that would serve a similar purpose?

We used ours until DD1 could crawl. Just buckle her in and she'll be fine.

They make infant to toddler rockers. They are the alternative to the bouncy seat. Personally, I don't really like them, or at least the one my mom has. It vibrates like the bouncy chair and it rocks instead of bounces but the seat is hard and not hammock style like the bouncy chair.

I love this chair:

If you take away the tray it is just a regular chair. It is good for sitting in- not for reclining to sleep or anything like that though.

Not to scare you but to help you make a decision...
I caught my DD right before she toppled over in her bouncy chair. She used a dangly toy to pull herself up, leaned toward her toes and came very close to tipping over. I was soooo sad to put that chair away because it was the only way I could take a shower when we were home alone!!!
But maybe you have a sturdier model than ours...? ;0)

I tried using ours after DD could sit, and she started to sit up and definitely would have toppled if I wasn't right there. Ours is back in storage.

I know what you mean! We use this one http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-I.../dp/B000WUB9O4
I count on it for showers.

I had that one for my ds (many years ago!) and loved it! We didn't have any problems until he started climbing on it and standing up and using it surfboard style

Also, I think a clarification needs to be made - can she sit up on her own as in you sit her up and she doesn't topple over or can she pull herself up to a sitting position? If it's the 1st don't worry, if it's the 2nd, use the chair only with supervision.

Forum crashing here, but I saw this in new posts.

This is why you need to use supervision no matter what:

This happened just before dd learned to get herself into a sit. (My kids were very late in sitting, though.) She was about 7 months. We put the chair away after that. I hadn't noticed (I was in the room, just not looking), when ds called my attention to her plight.

We had the Infant to Toddler Rocker that someone linked to and my kids used it until they were 2-3. It's a nice little chair.

DH put DD in hers when she started sitting well and came back to find her flipped with it on top of her. Needless to say we stopped using it. She LOVED hers too. I really thought it was a necessity to have with a baby, that is until DS completely HATED it.

If she's sitting it's probably best for it to go.

We also valued our bouncy chair and we definetly push the limit developmentally of its use. The one day my DD was buckled into it while I was in the shower and I heard a thud. I peeked out from behind the shower curtain and DD was on her stomach, still buckled into her seat, with the chair on top of her like a turtle shell. We finally decided to discontinue use and we bought (a previous years version) of this.

DD still uses it every day while I'm in the shower and she is now 2.5.

Chiming in - we had a similar thing happen - I was in the shower with 6-mo-old DS in his bouncy chair, and I peeked out to see him hanging over the side (not upside down at that point, but close). Bye, bye, bouncy chair. We still use the infant/toddler rocker. I agree it's not as comfy, but safer. Be warned though, I have a friend whose son was able to rock his violently enough that it almost tipped over forwards - if you foresee that, you can pull out the bar on the bottom to stop it from rocking.

We'd been considering the infant-toddler rocker. Looks like I should probably add it to our list of 6-month-day presents. Thanks for all the horror stories. (No, I mean it - I was definitely feeling too complacent about DD's safety.)
