Would you feel comfortable with any of these choices?

Thread Starter
I got into a friendly discussion with someone the other day... which of the following, if any, would you choose to do with your 6 month old infant?

A) Feed baby homemade applesauce, consisting of apples, refined sugar and cinnnamon
B) Have baby vaccinated 5x in one WBV (4 according to schedule + flu vax)
C) Attend a bonfire with baby in a sling

Which of these, if any, would you be okay with, and which of these, if any, would you NOT be okay with?

BTW, not trying to start a fight or anything so keep it friendly, please. Just curious if I am in the minority or majority on these issues.

Well I think I've done C, and I vax but on a spaced out schedule and starting later than 6 months so I wouldn't do B, and i wouldn't feed a baby just starting out on solids A. So for me C is OK but the other two aren't.

It would depend on the situation. If someone was offering the applesauce, I might allow some, if baby has been eating a lot, if it was socially hard to say no (like good friend offering, baby was going crazy trying to get it, too). A bonfire, sure, b/c I would be no where NEAR the fire, just for myself. But roasting marshmallows at the botanical gardens is OUT because kids were turning around and moving wildly with burning sticks! I guess in California no one does bonfires right-- I guess elsewhere you'd have to be close to stay warm, huh?

The vaxes, never.

I'd have no problem with C. I wouldn't do A or B.

Im w the pps. C is comprehensible to me, but the other 2 arent.

what would be the big deal about either a or c? if the baby's not ready for solids, doesn't matter what the food is, it's not making it into their stomaches. if they are, what would really be that bad about applesauce? i'd prefer unsweetened for regular use, but short of holding a baby down and forcing a spoon in their mouths, it's pretty hard to get them to eat something they're not interested in. we're not talking about chips or soda here! i've done c on many occasions. not sure why you wouldn't.

b is obviously a bit more touchy. i would be against having that many shots in one visit purely for overloading their systems and pain issues. i'm vaxing somewhat delayed, but in canada we have a different schedule anyway... there are only two shots happening max per visit.

My DD was not interested in solids at all at 6 months. But, if I had a baby who could handle A, I might give her a bit, minus the refined sugar. I would ask gently if we needed sugar at all.

Vax- no way.

Bonfire- if she was close to me and I could control how close or far we were to things, then sure!

I think I've actually done A&B, and C wouldn't worry me. I wouldn't bring a toddler or a preschooler to a bonfire, but a kid in a sling would be plenty safe.

Depending on age, depending on sugar content

We don't vax

Bonfires are awesome!

I wouldn't do applesauce with sugar, cinnamon is okay though I guess

I wouldn't do that many vaxes at any age in one sitting

Bonfire, for sure!

I would do B since I follow the mainstream (ACIP) vaccine schedule (Pediarix or Pentacel which are combined vax containing 3 + 2 other vaccines, so 3 injections, 5 vaccines). The other 2, I wouldn't do. I would feed unsweetened applesauce, and I suppose I could go to a bonfire if I could stay far enough from the smoke...but probably not.

Just me personally and just answering for fun:

A: Good heavens, no! I avoid sugar as long as possible. Babies do not know what they are 'missing'; they still like natural stuff!

B: Not likely on such a young one without a good/urgent reason. Definitely not the flu vax anyway though.

C: Maybe, but there's a place on the street a block away that does these great meat skewers, and I don't go there anymore b/c the smoke is too much for baby.

I would do a & c.

There are so many pieces of the puzzle missing here to satisfy your answer. I would not make my baby homemade applesauce with sugar, but if it were a choice as the only fruit or something, I'd give it to her.

We have bonfires weekly at my brothers 8 months out of the year and all of my kids of all ages go. I don't see why a baby in a sling would be a problem.

ETA, I don't do the flu shot and I have never been approached to do 4 vax at once but we vax on a delayed schecule.

i would omit the sugar personally. when i buy it i get the kind with no added sugar. it still tastes good.

B) Have baby vaccinated 5x in one WBV (4 according to schedule + flu vax)

i have given my kids that many vacc's before. never again. and we dont do the flu shot anymore ever.

C) Attend a bonfire with baby in a sling

i go everywhere with baby in sling. just tuck up the tail and keep it out of the fire.

I wouldn't do B but we aren't vaxing for now....I would prefer doind A without sugar.... depends on the circumstance and I would do C.

It's funny someone mentioned the cinnamon-- I know when I made applesauce when DD was a baby, my friend was surprised I put all my favorite spices in it (cin, allspice, etc). I figured why not? I know some oils are no good in pregnancy, but for eating, even for babes? I kind of assumed it was okay. Also, DD was closer to a year...

I still prefer no sugar in applesauce. It really doesn't need sweetening! Esp with cinnamon

I've heard that some people are allergic to cinnamon. Which wouldn't be a huge scare for me but one of my kids wasn't even having solids at 6 months and the other was having hardly any at all, so between the refined sugar, which would be my bigger issue, and the potential allergen, that isn't something I'd pick for a first food or one of the first foods.
I have no problem with A, though baby would need to be going wild for it, had already started solids, and be feeding himself.

I think B is just asking for a reaction, even if it's 'just' a fever and a kid who feels like crap.

I'd do C with a tucked tail and out of the way of the smoke.
I wouldn't do a flu shot, but with DD I did do that many vax, but that was before I knew to question vax-ing and the schedule.

Cinnamon seems too strong for a baby, it can be allergenic, and the oil can cause facial irritation(I used to not be paranoid about allergies, but my DS had an allergic reaction, so now I am). Sugar, eh, it's not like the worst thing.

I would definitely take my baby to a bonfire in a sling, and I have. No biggie to me.

C - I see no problem with taking a baby in a sling to a bonfire.

The feeding of homemade applesauce, I'd consider if my baby was already eating and could spoon feed themself. The added sugar makes me a bit hesitant, and I don't see why you'd have to include it (not that I've ever made applesauce, so maybe it's necessary).
