Freestanding HEPA air filter?

I'm considering getting a freestanding HEPA air filter - just for our bedroom - and wondering if they are worth it? Do they really work? Are they very noisy? Particular brand/model you recommend? I'd like to spend less than $150.

One of our neighbors smokes, and I can often smell the smoke in our bedroom (even when the windows are closed) and it really bothers me!

We have a cheap one for my son's room that my mother-in-law bought to help with his asthma (it cost $75 at Lowe's). I thought it was a waste of money until I realized that his room is the only room in the house that is dust free! I never have to dust in there. The HEPA filters cost about $45 and need to be replaced once a year. The carbon filters are cheap and need to be replaced every 3 months. I'm not sure how they do for smells, but they certainly work great for dust.

My son has one is his bedroom and like the pp said his room is the one place in the house without dust! You'd want a true HEPA and read ratings and reviews.

I have a HEPA filter in my bedroom. It is nothing fancy, Hunter brand, although one of the larger models they had.

I find it truly helps my allergies, and I enjoy the wrrrrr sound it makes at night.

LOL...I enjoy the white noise from it too!

I ended up with this one and it has definitely eliminated the smell from the smoke. It will be a huge bonus if it eliminates dust and helps with our seasonal allergies too
