Fruit, Cheese Tray for Labor - Page 2

Another vote for grapes! I bought some and put them in the freezer ahead of time -- they were the best thing EVER when I was in labor. I couldn't keep much food or liquid down, but the frozen grapes were perfect.

I don't think I had much interest in cheese when I was in labor. I think it would have been too strong of a smell/flavor for me then. But it's a nice idea to have something like that for your midwife or other people who might be around.

I remember drinking a lot of yogurt smoothies with sorbet and bananas and honey... those got me through the first two days !

Comtessa, that's interesting, because all I ate during labor was (very mild) cheese and crackers, and part of a pear. I fainted the first time I got up after delivery, and my midwife scolded me for not eating well in the previous 35 hours.

I've been assuming that because I have fragile blood sugar levels as well as low-ish blood pressure, I need to be more careful to keep some food in me during labor. I don't remember being nauseated at all during my last labor, just not interested in food. So I think I feel bold enough to plan for a good amount of appealing food to be available for me. I may even make myself eat a real meal as soon as I realize I'm in early labor.

Of course this is my second baby, and I'm planning a waterbirth this time, so with any luck labor will be much shorter this time and lack of food won't be a big problem.

I think having a large selection of things to choose from is a good idea.

In addition to our meat and cheese tray I bought yesterday... I also got some italian ices, grapes, tomatoes, crackers, granola bars and a few other things as well. Plus bread for toast and my favorite jelly.

I think I went a little overboard last time around with my "labour buffet" but it sure made for some fantastic leftovers for the first week at home with a newborn!
I remember reading a mdc thread about all of the different foods people were planning & settled on a mix of quick to grab snack stuff as well as fresh fruits & some more substancial & filling meals in case labour went long & was over the dinner hour. If I remember correctly this is what I had:
-2 kinds of home made cookies (ok these were really for me!)
-a few kinds of home made muffins
-fruit tray
-cheese, meats & sandwich fixings available in the fridge
-homemade chili in the crockpot
-a selection of teas, coffee, hot chocolate, soft drinks & juices
-my labour aide
-miso soup
hmmm I'm sure there was more that I can't remember off the top of my head. A little overboard yes but everyone was well fed!

Mmmmm!

What a tasty idea! (I've never eaten anything in labor, never hungry but this would taste so good postpartum too!)

I think I'll be keeping some Jarlsberg and Camembert on hand with apples, grapes and veggie flavored rice crackers.

For my first two, at the birthing centre they brought a variety of cheeses, crackers, cookies and fruit....

I didn't want to give that up with my UCs!!!

My husband made me a snack when ds#3 was born and a friend of mine made me a platter for my last birth... Hers was the best, it had cheeses, crackers, banana bread made with tons of grains and dates, fresh fruits and carob squares... it was perfect!
