It's in the video. My ex is a HUGE Suzanne Vega fan. We went to her concert in Vashon as our first date when I was 17. And then down for the one at the zoo because her bassist invited us. Then we all went out for pizza and beer. It was fun. She's nice, but she was sick so a bit out of it.

I don't think siblings have to have "matching" names.

The boy name we've picked is not popular, and may well be considered weird. That's why we're not sharing ahead of time, because we don't want to hear what people (read: our families) think until he's actually born and legally named.

My DH is pushing for a girl's name that isn't super unique, but is an Irish name that could present some pronunciation difficulties. That said, I have a different girl name picked and it's my turn to name the baby.

ETA: I worked with a fellow whose wife was a Luca. Go for it!

Luka is cute! I know a little boy named Luca.

I agree with other posters about likeing unique names but not weird spellings. If we were having a girl I wanted to name her Necia (pronounsed Neesha). It's my Grandmothers name, DH didn't want to name out kids after family members plus we are having a boy. HD wanted to name him Xander so I compromised and said if we name him Alexander you can call him Xander.

Two cents on other unique names, my cousins LO is named Indira and they call her Indie.

I am partial to Alexander. It is my maiden name and my son's middle name.

DD's name is Aniela (ahnyella) which is polish for Angela (american name) and it's meaning is Angel. Its very popular in Poland but i live in America and everyone thinks her name is so weird. my non-polish family tried to talk me out of it. DHs mom calls her "annella" and it drives me absolutely insane!

her "american" nickname is Ella which i refuse to call her that now that everyone treats her real name like its so weird...but DH calls her it sometimes..but we figured when she goes to school if she has any issues with her name Ella will be easy enough for the kids to understand...if she likes that anyway.

her Polish nickname would be Ania but i knew alot of them and i didnt like any haha so i choose not to call her that either.

go with you're gut!

And yeah, Luka reminds me too much of the child abuse song. I wouldn't want a kid of mine carrying that around.
Never heard the song.
Is it older?

Also - kids don't have to have matching names. And the stories BEHIND my kids names are... "different."

How do you pronounce that? Gaudelio?

On a side note, my daughter - Hayden - was named after a street in Arizona I don't know why, I just saw the street and liked it.

The whole spelling thing, though? I don't really understand it either. Especially if the name is already unique.

I like odd, uncommon, old names... There are just way too many Jessicas, Brittanys, Ashleys, Jasons, Adams ect. Why not mix things up a bit?

I don't mind alternate spellings, so long as they are alternates that already exist. Ethnic spellings for instance. Bly vs. Bligh, you know? I have an Ainslee and it has about 5 different spellings all of which are quite nice. I don't get the town in Arizona vowels with y's thing. I keep thinking about that and keep coming up with Sydony(Sedona) which just doesn't turn out right. *haha*

I think I am having a boy(surprise!)... I want a name with an "L" in there somewhere. My favorite that I have come up with so far is Hollis. It's pretty uncommon, I think.

Mesa = Mysy ? Glendale = Glyndyly ? Or Tucson = Tycsyn?

I like Hollis. I've never heard it before, but, I like it.

I LOVE the name Hollis! It's a perfect boy's name, I think -- it brings to mind both strength and sensitivity.

If I remember correctly, she wanted her children to know that they were so special, they were the only people in the world to *ever* have their particular names.

I mean, of course children should know they are loved and cherished and valued etc. etc., but that's unnecessary, in my opinion.

They had to change their rules slightly for their daughter. her name is Payge, which is not so unusual, really. I guess they realized that the "only ys" thing was awfully limited after having given their son that particular name...

I believe their daughter's middle name also had ys for vowels, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is....

I keep thinking of other names her kids could have.

Prescott... Parker... Mesa... Chandler... Douglas... Duncan... Payson... Jerome

Thanks for the good vibes on the name Hollis, ladies! I also get the strength and sensitivity feeling from it. I actually first heard the name in a children's book... The Pumpkinville Mystery. Hollis Goodbody is a farmer who helps establish a new town when the officials of the old town turn corrupt and greedy... He's really a good guy. *haha* All of our children have an "L" in their name somewhere, so I wanted to keep that up. Feel kinda doofy picking a name out of a children's book, but I just really can't get over liking it.

Well... At least Phyynyx works out pretty well, considering. I do have to say that the little guy is lucky they didn't decide to go with Mesa of Sedona first.

I mean, far be it from me to judge anyone else's choices. After all, I don't have to live with or deal with the name, and it's not hurting anyone, obviously, but that just seems, to me, like trying to be different just in order to to be different, rather than falling in love with a non-traditional or somewhat unique name.

But, I have never and will never say a word to her...
Oh... i just peed myself :

You're totally right. I had some real hum-dingers picked out for my future kids when I was younger. And I totally reserve the right to pull any of those hum-dingers out of the box if I so choose. *haha* By the power vested in me by my Mighty Uterus and Hard Working Vagina, I'll name my kids what I want! Well, I gotta let DH think he's got a little bit of say.

I personally don't think my children's names are that unusual. But everyone else seems to. My son's name is Alastair and my daughter's name is Kira. We considered other, weirder, names like Ayene (sounds like the letters I, N, A), Kai (K-eye), Sadia (suh-dee-uh), Kiaran (key-ah-run) and many others but DH and I couldn't agree on them. (I would think his were too weird, he would think mine were)

I don't think my kids names are odd, but I went to school with kids with names like Precious and Caesar, so who knows?
