And yeah, Luka reminds me too much of the child abuse song. I wouldn't want a kid of mine carrying that around.
Hayden is pretty unique for a girl. A little less heard of than for a boy, anyway.

I love the name, and I've NEVER heard of the child abuse song...I'm guessing a lot of other people haven't, either, and even if they have, I doubt that's what they're going to associate the name with. It's impossible to find a name without a single negative connotation.

I'm saddled with a rare first name (never met anyone with this name that had it spelled the same, met a kid when I was a kid that had a different spelling, that's it.) My middle names are bizarre (one is an African country - thanks to my idiot biological father.) No, it's not my username here!

I'm paranoid about people finding me and stalking me online so I will tell you my first name only, no, I'm not famous nor a female actor, nor do I have a PhD. I went back several pages on Google and none of the hits are me soo....my first name is Lalania. I was named after a ghastly Donovan song that I despise (it's about a prostitute!)

I've had 36 years of bullying, mockery, stupid questions (are you Hawaiian??) or old hippies singing the horrible song to me, people spelling/pronouncing it wrong blah blah.

Please, be careful about saddling your kid with a truly bizarre/weird/hard to spell name. They may suffer years of misery if you're not careful...

That said, my son's name is Roger. Not many Rogers running around but it is not a bizarre name either IMO.

My oldest is Damian and yes we got grief about nameing our son after the devil ( the Omen came out around his birth, we didn't name him for the movie)

my second is Ainsley, he is a boy. I constantly get grief about it being a girls name. apparntly it's not common for boys in America. We had never heard it and found it in a baby book under boys.

This baby right now might be Cadence or Cael. whatever they have beatuiful names and we gave the boys very standard middle names so if they decide to go with their middle names they can

luka is pretty and I like it

I don't mind alternate spellings, so long as they are alternates that already exist. Ethnic spellings for instance. Bly vs. Bligh, you know? I have an Ainslee and it has about 5 different spellings all of which are quite nice. I don't get the town in Arizona vowels with y's thing. I keep thinking about that and keep coming up with Sydony(Sedona) which just doesn't turn out right. *haha*

I think I am having a boy(surprise!)... I want a name with an "L" in there somewhere. My favorite that I have come up with so far is Hollis. It's pretty uncommon, I think.
DDCC My chiro's name is Hollis...he has become very near and dear to my heart throughout this pregnancy

My daughter's name is Ainslee. I had also never heard it and found it in a baby name book... I can't remember if it was under boys or girls though. I know I did pick it out of the Irish/Scottish section(ethnic baby name book). Technically, it IS a boy's name but I totally took advantage of the fact that it has been used for girls, just because I loved the name SOOO much. I picked out what I thought was a more feminine spelling. But I think it makes an equally rockin' boy's name... Why anyone would give you grief, I've got no idea. Heck, I think Ashley makes a better boy's name than a girl's name.

Very cool! You've gotta be strong and sensitive to be a chiropractor, right?

I've never heard the child abuse song. The name Luka reminds me of the hottie doctor that was on ER.

DDCC-

DS's name is Ezra Shade Christopher Yule...yes, he has three middle names. Ezra just "fit" when he was born and Christopher was after my dad. Shade was a name I had been wanting to name one of my kids since I was 14 and I still wanted to use it when I had him at almost 21 so I made it a middle name. I got a good amount of protests on that. I threw in Yule when I found out Ezra was a religious name to kind of neutralise it. (I'm not of any one spiritual belief, though they do tend to lean more toward Pagan beliefs.) Once people hear Yule they forget all about Shade. I get a lot of raised eyebrows with that one.

I have a good list of possible names so far (I won't make a final decision until s/he is born, though, just so I can make sure it fits baby) and most of them are Australian aboriginal names, so obviously they're all on the unique end.

My ex (this baby's father, who is now basically MIA in regards to involvement) only ever voiced one idea and that was Fortunella. To each their own, but that's a big fat veto for me. Though at the time I didn't have the heart voice any opinion on it because I was just so proud of him for finally having a suggestion. But now that he's turned into a gigantic UAV I get to name baby whatever I want! Woo!

Oh, and to throw more names out there. My big sister's name is Jessamy Laurel, my brothers are Amory and Gaelyn (I could be spelling them wrong, they died before I was born so I hear their names more than I see them), my name is Emlyn and my younger sister is Alida. And my big sister named her daughter Annika Rhiannon.

Jessamy - Jess-uh-mee
Laurel - Lore-elle
Amory - Aye-more-ee
Gaelyn - Gay-lin
Emlyn - Em-lin
Annika - Anne-ik-uh (Not aaaahnika)
Rhiannon - Ree-anne-un

OMG, Smeep! You must have the coolest parents! I love all of those names. I especially like the name Amory... Hmmm...

I love the name Galen. But nobody will let me use it. They INSIST it would just get the boy a ton of grief. Which it probably would. But what boy doesn't get called gay for something at some point anyway? I love Irish names.

I like the name Luka! The first thing I think of is the doctor from ER!

My names aren't all particularly unique, but I have a theme some people think odd. lol.
I have Meadow Shae, Lily Rain, and Sage Ashlyn. Other names I have pondered for future children are...
Girl: Willow, Saffron, Ivy
Boy: River, Kale, Briar, Apsen, Reed, Colt, and Forest.

My boy list is a lot longer since I have 3 girls already!

Man, people must not read enough now - I love that name, and instantly recognized it from the Anne of Green Gables series by LMM Beautiful name!

I think Luka is an adorable name and I don't think you'll get a lot of grief over it. It's unique without being downright weird. I know a boy named Luca, but I actually like it better for a girl. To me, names ending in "a" are more feminine.

To the poster who is planning on naming her son, Hollis. I love it!

To the poster named Lalania. I considered naming my dd Leilani or Leilania and I'm not Hawaiian. I think it's a beautiful name!

My husband has a cousin named Leilani. She is 1/4 Hawaiian. Either way Hawaiian or not I love the name.

visiting from Nov ddc..

I have a DD named Luca and we absolutely love her name.

For me personally though, spelling it Luka with a k goes into the "krea8tyve" spelling territory which I dont like.

I think since the boys' name is spelled with a "c" switching it to a "k" is acceptable. I would agree with you if she was giving it to a boy though. My son's name sometimes has 2 Ts in it and that drives me crazy.

That was my first thought too! In fact, having been to Green Gables in PEI several times and growing up with the "Anne" stories, I immediately added Avonlea to our girl name list...probably not for this next baby, but perhaps in the future!

I just realized the park near us is Avonlea Park (we also have a street nearby with that name) and I have always thought it was pretty.

They're total hippies.

If this baby is a boy I will probably use both Amory and Galen/Gaelyn (honestly not sure on the spelling, I should probably check that lol) or a combination of the two because they're my brothers' names and they died in a fire before I was born. And, if it's a boy, I think I'll use Thames again as a middle name, to honour the baby I lost. Of course I'm thinking this will be a girl, but we'll see!
