Gender neutral clothes don't exist

Thread Starter
I am having my third child and I want to get a special outfit to bring the baby home in that is just for baby. I want something that is gender neutral since I don't know what baby is instead of buying two otufits because I don't want the first outfit to be so gendered. I went to a few stores and so far nada except at the super expensive boutique store that I can't really afford. It would be so hard if you had to get a bunch of outfits ahead of time. Everything is either very boyish and blue or very girlish and pink. They only have a boy and girl specific sections in the store. I don't even like blue or pin. I don't know why they can't have some nice white or cream outfits that could go for either or something besides yellow pajamas.

I found this for my baby coming in February:

The first pic of the baby wearing the green polka dot outfit.

And here are some other cute options:

Gerber has some green stuff but its super boring and if you're an active part of the Nestle boycott Gerber may not be an option.

I would check stores like GoodWill and consignment shops. They tend to have a LOT more gender neutral items than mainstream stores and its cheap too.

I dont' have anything specific to offer, but totally check out goodwill and such. Also, even though stores don't have a gender neutral section, there are gender neutral clothes in each section if you look.

One of my favorite favorite outfits for my girls, even though I do love pink and purple girly stuff, is a gender neutral outfit. I call it "the duck butt suit." It's a lightweight sleeper that snaps up, it's got yellow and white stripes across it. On the upper left corner, like where polos often have pockets, is a pair of ducks appliqued on. And on the back, on the butt of course, is a yellow panel on which a duck face is embroidered. It's just SO cute to me.

Do you like any sports teams? I consider most sports team outfits/onsies to be gender neutral, though you will usually find those outfits in the boys section. I am a super big football fan and I have brought both of my girls home in Colt's football gear. The dd I just had yesterday will be going home tomorrow in Colts gear.

Oh, you know what, there's a sleeper that I have a version of, that I have recently seen at Walmart, in the girls secion. It's white and has teddy bears on it.

Do you sew? Have any friends who sew? That way you pick the fabric!

Maybe try Etsy?

It is frustrating, isn't it? We didn't know the gender with DS (and we don't with this one either) so we have a lot of yellow and green outfits that people bought in the newborn size... which is nice for this pregnancy now that I've gotten them out of the box! I'm sure it will be all blue or all pink once the baby is born. Sigh...

I have a friend from Japan who claims that the baby/kid clothing there is not as gendered as it is here. Our culture sure does insist on being a "girl" or "boy" right from the start.

Gymboree always has a few lines in their newborn selection of gender neutral clothes. If you look at "organic" labels, there are usually a lot of beigey clothes. Check out places like Under the Nile.

If you're looking at more dress-up clothes, then you will have trouble because I don't think that there really is gender-neutral dress-up clothing, even for babies... except for long fancy Christening gowns, but you'll have trouble fitting those in the carseat!

How about something like this?

http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/produc...scid=771727012

It's from the newborn boy section at Old Navy, but it looks pretty non-gendered to me. I do share your frustration, though. We are purposely not finding out the sex of our baby, partly so we can avoid at least a little bit of the pink or blue onslaught. Still, though, I think this baby will be crossdressing at least half the time. Even when something looks safe at first, a closer look reveals some kind of slogan or picture that clearly implies "boy" or "girl."

Why oh why do people insist on overly gendering clothes for newborn babies?? Seriously, I do not need my infant son to wear something that says "chicks dig me" or "mr. muscle." Gah!

Have you thought of red? I never did, until one baby shower I went to for a momma who wasn't finding out. And it was so WOW! There was a onesie, a bib, a white and red burp cloth, and they were all so perfectly gender neutral. I loved it!

That's totally true. Much easier to find over there.

Oh yeah, and if there is an H&M near you they have really, really cute baby stuff. A lot of it is organic and a lot of it is gender neutral. They also offer a lot of... and you might want to sit down for this, it's pretty shocking... primary colors even for newborns. Which I found very refreshing

i totally agree with you, it's FRUSTRATING. my first daughter was big. this one looks like she'll be just as big - meaning by 6 months old, she might be in 18 month clothing. i can't find ANY gender neutral clothing in older than 3 month sizes. if i hadn't already found out from amnio that it was a girl, there's no way i could possibly stock up on clothes before the kid is born.. and now, i'll have a closet full of pink. i'm ok with that, but what about green? green is one of my fav colours. even a very girly style in green or blue, can't find it. sigh.

Does H&M have an online store? I really like their baby stuff! But the nearest one is aprox 5 hours away.

I LOVE the neutral stuff at Gymboree, I got last seasons collection, and part of this seasons green elephant print. I also got some gerber 3-pack of one piece outfits at Target for next to nothing, a few outfits from JC Penney. I also plan on getting some white outfits from Dharma trading and dying them myself in whatever colors I like.

Carter's has some pretty cute yellow giraffe outfits. I know this b/c I just bought some. Kohl's doesn't have an awesome selection of gender neutral stuff, but it is decent.

I also don't find out gender but find most "neutral" clothes too boyish. However, I love things like BabySoy chocolate footie with tea green trim and many colors like Blackberry or Clover from Kate Quinn Organics. Speesees has some good GN things, too, that aren't just pastel green and yellow.

Also, simple white or natural works beautifully for either. You can even choose a set of accessories (hat or bow or whatever) to go with them for the different genders. For our first, we found a lovely white footed outfit that I found to be very GN. It happens to be "Baby Dior" and I'm sure it was expensive. However, it was perfect, in my eyes, for a coming home outfit for our firstborn, and has been worn by each of our subsequent children. Must find it and make sure it's ready for photos with #4, too. (With our homebirthed babies, we've just done pics in it and maybe a first outing.)

So it's pricey if full price, but when there are sales, I loooove the stuff on Threadless Kids (http://kids.threadless.com/). Lots of cute images on greens and yellows in addition to pinks/blues. I seriously almost got a few onsies for the eventual child we'll have (in about 4 years) when everything was on sale for $5 or $10...LOL
