A customer said this to me today about her previous BFing experience as I helped her pick out nursing bras for her newest baby (her first girl). Obviously, nothing would change what happened and it wouldn't be appropriate for me to say anything too strong against circ to a customer, so all I could do was mumble something about it being very traumatic for babies, then change the subject. It just made me want to cry.

Clearly, she realized that the circumcisions were to blame for what happened, but she grinned and shrugged as she said it, as if to say, "Well, it had to be done, sucks that breastfeeding didn't work out because of it." It sucks living in the Midwest.

Honestly, I ran a new mom's support group for seven years in Atlanta... a fairly high circ area. I would always hear the same story over and over.. "he nursed fine at first and then got fussy and wouldn't. I got home and he's crying all the time and I just gave him a bottle. He must have been starving to death. My milk was no good for him." Never did anyone figure that circumcision had anything to do with not nursing well. The moms of girls may have had some sore nipples or such but no need to quit nursing.

That is what happened to my nephew He was nursing like a champ until they brought him back from his circ and sis tried to nurse him. He would go nowhere near her after that, so they resorted to bottles.

i wonder if it is because when you nurse you hold them towards you (at least at first... until lazy nursing sets in and they are bigger. lol) and so there is all that pressure on the groin. having just had a big chunk of skin cut off and having a big open wound right there, it must be just extra painful. but when you bottle feed, you can sort of have their body not pulled in close to you so there wouldn't be that extra pressure.

that is so sad, those poor babies.
