When I was a child, my father taught me to read at home when I was around 3 years old using something called "The Reading Kit." Later, I learned some fairly advanced mathematics using "The Math Kit." All I remember of them was that on the back of my door I had a big poster of a tree, and after we finished a section, I would paste on a flight of stairs. There were probably 15-20 flights of stairs to the top of the tree. I also seem to remember some gnomes. I am going to ask my dad about this, but I was wondering whether anyone else out there is familiar with this. I am now 31 years old, so this was probably around 82-84.

Also, I know that I want to start with reading and math (FUN!) lessons with my LO in the not too distant future (well, relatively, she's only 5 months right now lol) and I was wondering what you experienced parents would recommend as beginner materials to give her a head start on math and reading. We do not plan to home school her, but I think education needs to be taking place at home throughout her childhood.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
