i think my nearly 5 yo has an oral fixation. he has something in his mouth ALL THE TIME. ok, not all the time, but a LOT. if he's sitting listening to a book, he's got his fingers in there. during the day i often find him mouthing some random toy. he doesn't seem able to stop himself from doing it, though if we play an active game or something he doesn't chew/suck/mouth anything. at least not that i have noticed.
mouth sounds (chewing, sucking, kissing, crunching, etc) are something i cannot tolerate, i want to crawl out of my skin. i try not to harp on him too much, i realize its MY problem, but i am having a hard time with this. and now i just googled 'oral fixation and children' and i see a bunch of links suggesting it may be a sensory disorder. and now i'm a little concerned that i should be seeking some sort of therapy for him.
i pushed him to wean from the breast around 2 3/4 years, and he gave up his paci habit willingly (in exchange for a new toy) around 3.5. i feel terrible about the weaning, i have for a long time. i was pg and it was just more than i could handle, though i really should have done it more gently.
has anyone else had a child with an oral fixation? maybe that's not even what it is. any thoughts? suggestions? at any rate, thanks for reading.
