Yeast Infection!!!!???

I'm not sure where to post this. I'm 38wks this Thursday. Is it possible to get a yeast infection this late? I've usually had them in the first trimester but I've been having symptoms for the past week (just the itching). Does anyone know if it's safe to use anything OTC at this stage? Can it harm the baby during birth if it doesn't go away in time??? Please help, Mamas!!!!!
Thank you.

Yes, you can.

Try inserting probiotics or garlic.

Yes you can use OTC stuff, and personally, that's what I do for yeast infections. I have tried garlic and probiotics -- neither cure it for me. Probiotics are good for prevention, but if I'm symptomatic, I personally don't want to put up with it for long so I go for the 3-day stuff.

I must have had a little too much yeast going on at the end last time, because in the days following my actual birth it flared up in earnest. Itching, burning, yeasty discharge. Like the first days pp aren't enough without that nonsense! I used a topical cream, because I just couldn't stand it, and it did help very quickly. But I will say that dd had problems with yeast for months after that, with her diaper area, but especially in the folds of her neck.

My point being that I would treat in someway if I had an obvious overgrowth before birth, because it's none too pleasant afterwards!

I am really going to be pressing the probiotics and garlic towards the end of my pregnancy this time because I don't want to deal with all that again, definitely.

I recently went to my midwives for a suspected yeast infection, this is what they told me:

Yeast is VERY common all through pregnancy, b/c your natural flora & fauna turn more alkaline in pregnancy, which yeast loves. They suggested garlic (peeled, inserted into the vagina overnight), and also a rinse made up on 8-10ox of water and 1 tsp of straight vinegar, and use a spray bottle to squirt that over the opening of your vagina after you go to the bathroom. This helps make you more acidic again.

Also: you could have bacterial vaginosis which wouldn't necessarily react to the garlic or maybe even the vinegar rinse. For that she said to take a few cc's of straight hydrogen peroxide, lie down in the bathtub with your hips slightly elevated, and use a syringe to squirt the HP into your vagina. Let it sit for a minute or so, then just get up, let it run out, and go about your day. This helps kill the bad bacteria (taking probiotics helps, too).

I did the vinegar rinse + took probiotics and symptoms cleared up within a few days. Good luck!

You mean like the 3- day stuff with the suppositories? Is that safe?

I'm fighting a nasty yeast infection, I'm 32 weeks at this point.

Yes, the OTC internal creams are safe in pregnancy, the oral pills are not. My midwives recommend the 3 or 7 day treatments vs the one day as the dosage is higher in the one day and it's harder on the immune system. I did a 7 day treatment and it worked for about a week, now it's back. So I'm going to another 7 day of a different brand and see if that helps. My m/w told me to be taking probiotics too as all the yogurt I've been eating isn't enough, and I could try a 30% vinegar solution on a tampon to try and acidify the vagina a bit. I'm thinking I will wait until after I do the OTC stuff again as I am so sore, swollen, and red that I think vinegar would burn something awful right now. If I was earlier on I might try the more holistic treatments first but I'm getting near the end the the idea of pushing a baby out of a vagina that is so angry and sore is not sounding good to me.

Also, the yeast can't harm the baby but it could end up with thrush if you still have it during the birth, and then you would need to treat the baby.
