Newborn Fitted Stash - Last minute input before ordering

I CD'd my second inconsistently from 6 months (mainly used Pockets and wool cover at night) so this will be my first with CD from the beginning (baby due end of October).

I am anxious to get the diapers and prep them before the baby arrives but keep vacillating on how many truly NB size fitteds/covers to get. My DD was 8lbs 7 oz and my DS was 9lbs 12 oz - have no idea for sure how big this one will be but based on my averages would guess he/she will be on the bigger size but want to be prepared just in case to use CD from the get go.

I am sold on trying fitteds over prefolds and want to stick with natural fibers. I was able to pick up some little caboose bamboo items for 40% off at Satarababy.com (local store for me) so those are a done deal and the bulk of what I am buying based on reading lots of posts are fitteds that fit 5-15 lb range. My dilemma is how many truly NB I need both diapers and covers. I want to have at least 36 total to wash every other day and to be sure that I have enough stash for the hospital to keep the baby out of sposies (worried if my DH starts with a sposie he will balk at CD as he already thinks I am a bit nutty to try this full-time with #3!).

So my dilemma is will NB fitteds work in a cover that is bigger than a NB size or will this cause problems (leaks, blow outs)? How necessary is getting the NB size relative to the cord stump etc? Here is my stash as is and what I want:

Fitted Diapers:

Own:
2 caboose bamboo 6-12lbs

Want to purchase:
6 Tinkle Traps (No Closure) 6-15 lbs
6 Gigglebritches with pockets (No Closure) 5-15 lbs
12 OsoCozy velcro 7-13 lbs
Am on the fence about 12 Snugglebottoms Newborn (6-10 lbs) velcro or 6 NB and 6 Small (10-16 lbs)

This would leave me with either 12 or 6 truly NB fitteds

Covers:

Own:
1 old Nikky all cotton NB - up to 9 lbs (old cut is cut high)
2 caboose bamboo 6-12lbs
1 caboose wool 6-12 lbs
1 Aristocrat not sure if it is small or large size wool cover

Want to purchase:

1 Nikky Cotton (NB up to 9 lbs) (new cut is cut wider/longer)
1 Nikky Brethbl Poly (NB up to 9 lbs)
2 Nikky Heavy Duty Poly (NB/Sm – 8-14lbs)
1 Nikky Cotton (Size A-9-14 lbs)
1 Nikky Brethbl Poly (Size A- 9-14 lbs)

This would put me at 3 NB covers that won't work after 9 lbs.

I am wanting to try a variety of fitted diapers and types of covers but am pretty sold on Nikky covers from reviews and a CD friend. I am also thinking of purchasing a Thirsties Duo (6-18 lbs) cover and a Imse Vimse soft cover (Newborn 6.5-13 lbs or Small 11-17 lbs) as well to try those out. I can get those locally very easily.

I know I am WAY over thinking this! Thanks for any and all input!

The cover can make all the diff between leak and not if the fitted doesntfit just right. As for no closure dipes, how are planning to close them? I found theyre often incompatible w snappis and i could never figure out pins, so i wound up putting snaps on them.

As for covers, imse vimse runs quite large. Theyre great for containing messes, love the leg gussets, but my guy didnt fit into a sm until he was something like 3 mos. And at a year it still fits in the waist (but not the rise). We had to use preemie covers, and he was 8 lbs.

Thanks Cristeen - I had planned to use snappi's thinking they should work with prefold/fitteds but was also told that if used in a tight fitting cover with velcro (which the Caboose and Nikky's have) they may not need the closure - has your experience been that fitteds made out of prefolds are too bulky to work with a snappi? Thanks again for your response it just helps to hear from someone experienced. Both of my kids were past 20 lbs by 4 months but again hard to know for sure that this one will or won't follow the same pattern. Since I can get the Thirsties and Imse Vimse easily I was going to wait on that purchase until after the baby arrived and I was ready to or needed to try another cover.

Can I dissuade you from the nikky covers? IF your kids make it to 20 lbs by 4 months, that's FOUR sizes of diaper covers to buy for that short period of time. Or 2 sizes of thirsties duo, or 3 sizes of bummis (and they'll fit until 30 lbs) or regular thirsties. Also, at least the older nikky's I had were extremely trim and they didn't fit well over most fitteds.

Thanks Lunita for the input my goal is try a variety of fitted diaper types to see what I like and perhaps I should do the same with the covers instead of guessing I will like them. Babybunz.com sells the Nikky's and they sell the snugglebottoms because they do fit with Nikky's but I don't know if the other 3 types of fitteds will work with the Nikky's. Hmmmm. I guess what I am still not clear on is if true NB both fitted diapers and covers is a necessity or if the 5-15lb size will work well both for diapers and covers. Thanks again!

I've never used a fitted made from a PF. All of the no closure fitteds I've tried are made from a different type of fabric, which is why snappis don't always work too well. And with a NB, I wouldn't plan on going without a snappi/pins unless you're planning on washing the cover every time it's worn. IME, if you just lay the dipe in the cover and expect the cover to hold the dipe on, it usually will, but the dipe rarely will contain BF poos - those will be caught by the cover.
