Baby Clothes Bewilderment - Page 2

My son was born in December and he lived in footed sleepers until spring. You could use the short sleeve onsies as undershirts or donate them. They are nice as summer jammies. I was given so many clothes that were cute but pointless. Who puts a newborn in jeans and a fleece vest???

And be very careful about buying ahead- D was in 6 month clothes at 2 months, and 18 month clothes at 8 months. I buy em as I need em now!

And babies grow very differently, too. I would have bought an October baby 12 month summer clothes, too. My 3 month old (tomorrow!) wears 9 month clothes. I figure he'll be in 12 month clothes in the next 6 weeks or so.

LOL I would be the one to put a 3 month old in jeans and a fleece vest (I did, it was so cute!)

Now, with cloth, esp/ velcro closures, I put DS in a onesie or at least a shirt all the time, because the velcro rubs his belly as he is sitting and crawling and makes it red otherwise. If you are using disposables, or just have a curious baby, onesies also make it so babe can't get to the closures to try to take the diaper off. (but this usually doesn't happen until 6 months or more, I think)

DS has grown pretty "normally" except he is leaner than most his age. When I was buying - before he was born - I didn't buy bigger than 9 month clothes. Now for winter I am buying 12-18 month clothes (he will be one in November). Nothing wrong with buying ahead, just don't go more than one season out.

I second the don't wash EVERYTHING comment. We totally did, and now I wish we hadn't.

Babies are so different. My boy is a late October baby. I never had layers on mine, even though the winter so a typical New England winter and we don't heat much, he was and is a hot little guy. Friends of mine kept their baby, born 3 weeks later, in multiple layers of onsies, shirts, pants, blankets etc and their child was happy and fine.

Also, regarding sizing. Babies come in all kinds of sizes and shapes. Cloth diapers often make the need to size onsies and pants up. Our guy was perfectly average in the beginning, but then slowed down a lot and he is still in some cloths for 6 months old, although he is 10.

The sizing on the label also doesn't mean much, just try it on and see if it fits, if it doesn't, give it away, or lay it aside.

Best. Advice. Ever. Seriously. DS was born in October in Michigan. I got a ton of stuff (both at baby showers and what I bought). I assumed he would be an average sized baby (7ish lbs) so got lots of cute newborn clothes. I also got lots of newborn diapers. I took all the tags off the clothes, washed them and put them away. I took the diapers out of the packages to put them in the diaper holder so everything would be ready when baby was born.

Baby was born at almost 9 lbs, didn't fit newborn diapers (seriously had to squish his butt in them in the hospital because they didn't have anything bigger!), didn't come close to fitting in newborn clothes (had to squish him in the newborn outfit I brought to the hospital so I could get him home! LOL!).

What a waste.

I have learned my lesson if there is a next time

With ds I usually had him in a diaper, onesie (short sleeve) and then a one piece footie outfit or a shirt and pants outfit. He also wore onesies under his jammies. He pretty much wore onesies constantly. I love onesies. LOL! His next winter (when he was 1) I bought some long sleeve onesies and he wore those with short sleeve shirts (which he had a ton of so I didn't have to buy many long sleeve shirts since he had the long sleeve onesies). He wore onesies everyday/night until he was probably 2-2 1/2 years

i didn't get a chance to read thru but wanted to mention that short sleeve onesies are what my girls live in the 1st year (long sleeve ones in the dead of winter if it's really, really cold)-especially if you plan on babywearing at all. they will most likely be froggy-legged in a wrap, MT or sling so they are covered & getting your body heat too. once they are legs out, if it's cold, little pants like Carters sells cheap are great or babylegs.

in our house, it was typically the perfect slightly cooler temp for a baby not to mention you are nursing so much they are up against you all the time. and since my girls both do not like to be hot/sweaty, a onesie worked/works great. if you leave the house, you can layer & then put them in their car seat before you go outside & use a cover over the carseat (not a bundle me but one of the ones that goes elastic over the seat) or a blanket.

a nice "decorative or jazzed up" onesie is great for when you go out. i wanted my babes to be comfy & practical, but look dressed somedays.

I thought I'll throw in, that our little guy was only wrapped in blankets during the first 2 weeks. I was nursing the whole time and I had such a hard time and such badly cracked/chipped/bleeding nipples, that both of us naked was the best and easiest for all of us. I was just wearing a nice cozy bathrobe

So much baby clothing is of weird and unusual design. And seasonality makes a big difference. I think the onsies you described are probably designed to go under a jumper or pants.

Baby clothes are fun but one thing is that they grow out of them so fast! And the sizes really vary too.

Totally! DD is 11 months and still fits nicely into her 9-month outfits. In fact, one pair of 6-9 month jeans just started fitting her last week. She's pretty petite (despite being born at over 8 lbs).

I also noticed that, on average, the clothes I received from the UK are way bigger than the North American ones, and those from France are way smaller. DD fits into a 12-month dress from France, a 6/9-month dress from NA, and a 6-month dress from the UK. Go figure!
