Staying healthy this illness season

Hi there!

I am the proud mama to a 3 yo boy and a 2 month old little girl. We live in the PNW and last "grey season"(Late October to May), DS was sick, recovering or avoiding getting sick again it seemed like 85% of the time. We cancelled so many playdates and fun things during an already bummer time of the year due to the weather. Basically it all seemed to snowball when he stopped nursing at the beginning of the year.

So here we are in mid Sept and he already has a nasty little cold. This year he is in pre-school 2 mornings a week and is so excited about it. He is also excited about the indoor playground he visits and a mini soccer season thing. I want him to be WELL for all of it. I am honestly traumatized by last year's sick times.

We don't eat a ton of processed foods or sugars. Most of what he eats are fruits and meat. I can get oranges and other vitamin c things in him, no problem. I'm also slowly getting him into yogurt/kefir, but can't push it too much and am thinking about doing a probiotic. Bone broths are a no go, although I can cook white rice in them and he'll eat that.

I am pumping to build up a freezer stash for my babe. Not a ton, like 10 minutes a day give me about 2 feedings a week (3.5 oz each) for the freezer. I have thought about pumping more/giving what I pump to DS in the milk bottle he has in the mornings. I would imagine that might help. Thoughts? He's been off breastmilk for 10 months now.

Otherwise, what do you do to keep healthy during the illness season? Last year, everyone seemed sick. The bugs around here were vigilant. But, in my mind, its just cruel to keep a kid cooped up for months on end, just to take him out and get him sick again. It just has to be different this year.

TIA for anything you can offer!

Two other things I can think of:
Carlson's D Drops
Last year I found an elderberry extract syrup called "winterberry" at our local health food store and that seemed to work wonders. Sorry I don't have the brand name available.
