How do I make HB work?!?

I just found out Im pregnant with our third. Our first was born in the hospital and although I had my "natural" birth, it was horrible. I had an IV set up and something was put in it against my wishes, then I was given an episiotomy after only 20 minutes of pushing with no problems. Second birth I had a homebirth planned. I was on an island in Alaska and due to going so far overdue my midwife had to leave and about a week before I had him I had to switch everything to a hospital birth. I birthed at home and since I was only a 2 minute drive, went to the hospital when I was fully dilated. He was sunny side up and the dr. tried making me get a c- section but I refused. After about 2 seconds of pushing he gave me a horrible episiotomy without any warning or anything and pulled my baby out. It was HORRIBLE! I am not in NC in a very small town. I know cpms arent allowed to deliver here, there are no freestanding birthing centers around either and I dont think I have it in me to UC. I am seriously freaking out and I just found out Im pregnant. I have no idea what to do but I do KNOW that I do not want to have my last baby in a hospital. I dont want another horrible birth. I was in heaven with my son at home and literally was in the hospital for 17 minutes before he was born. I know with a midwife assisting I can do it. Any advice here?

Maybe post in your tribal area to see if there are any mommas in your position and find out what they did?

I'm pretty sure there are midwives practicing in your area. Try posting in your tribal area, asking at local LLL meetings, getting on local homebirth lists, talking to some local doulas.

There are plenty of CPMs practicing underground in NC. Try http://www.nchomebirth.com . Also there are a surprising number of CNM's practicing now as well.

Also I posted in your other thread, could you possibly cross into VA where CPMs are legal?

I dont know where in VA I could go. It seems crazy to me to have to have my baby at a motel! I am 10 mibnutes from the state line because I am almost in South Mills. I have been looking for info on Cpms but havent found anything yet. We have a CNM here in Elizabeth City named Ashley Davis but she only does hospital births.

I'm using a CPM in MD where they are not licensed and, although if if came about differently I may have been a bit hesitant, it seems perfectly "normal". Here, they don't even seem all that underground, can even take insurance (though practicing w/o license), request ultrasounds and etc. I'd give one a try and, yea, use your tribal area.

http://www.virginiahomebirth.com/aboutus.htm

http://birthpartners.com/lb-1-54-Ham...ed_States.aspx

Are either of these close? I know that when I interviewed midwives they were closely networked since they use each other for back up and were happy to suggest each other.

There are loads of wonderful CPMs attending HBs in NC! I had a fantastic birth with one (in the Triangle, but I'm pretty sure my MW attends births as far as the coast) . PM me if you want to talk, but I'd definitely start by filling out the form on the nchomebirth.org website--MWs can contact you once you submit the form, and you can go from there.

Here's the NC "Tribe" forum, if you want to post there to see if there's anyone in your area: http://mothering.com/discussions/forumdisplay.php?f=78

Yup, same here! (Although I'm using a different CPM.) She even has a website! She is licensed in VA although she doesn't actively practice there. She says she doesn't 'hide' who she is in case of a transfer & the climate is not a problem - no one is actively looking to prosecute CPMs in Maryland at the moment.

I admit, I found the idea of an illegal, underground "renegade" MW to be odd at first, but that was a couple years ago. The more I learned about the birth culture in the US, the more the CULTURE struck me as bizarre (i.e. the ridiculous AMA and ACOG opposition to HB) & not the fact that CPMs practice illegally & women chose to use them. I think the book "Born in the USA" by Dr. Marsden Wagner really helped me change that view.

The tribal threads tend to be a bit slow. I would do a search, rather than start a new thread. Maybe PM people on previous threads as well. Also, use that NC midwife website and start calling around. I know a lot of MW travel much further than an hour - mine has offices over an hour apart, so did my MW in CA. You've just got to do a little leg work.
