Soapnuts

I started using soapnuts a while back & I was happy with the results, until I cleaned the washing machine. I got sick of looking at the dust in the middle thing of the top loader. I unscrewed it & looked down in the middle of the thing & it was full of thick, black, soap residue. Gross.... it was so gross. I pulled it all out of there & cleaned it up, but now it seems as if the soapnuts are not working well on my dipes. So I'm wondering if it is actually the left over laundry soap in everyones washers that is really doing the cleaning? Has anyone else used soapnuts in a new washer, or one that has been stripped of soap reside?
Any tips would be great, I spent $50 on these things, they are getting used even if I have to feed them to the kids.

Hmmm, soap nuts cereal?

No advice here, though, I have a front loader and never used soap nuts on CDs.

I am thinking about using soap nuts too. I was told they work better w/warm or hot water, which I do not use (except for diappers).
What I was told is that you can boil them and make a liquid detergent w/them this way. I am wondering if you would end up having the same problem w/residue?!? That might help ??

I would like to know how they clean regular cloths though, been having a hard time finding anything that is gentle enough for my baby Eczema and that really cleans.

Well, the washer is about 8 years old, so the residue was old build-up from regular laundry detergent. I had started using the soapnuts before I discovered it in there & when I cleaned it out I started having issues.

I thought about making a liquid, but the next thing I put in a pot to boil is going to be my jam, so I totally just don't feel up to it right now! (Lazy) Hahaha! I have been pretty happy when I use them for regular clothes. It has not irritated my kids eczema, even the baby & she gets pretty bad.

Since posting this I've used them 2 more times to wash dipes & changed the routine that I found suggested by everyone online, which was to run a full cycle of wash & rinse cold, add soapnuts, wash warm or hot/rinse cold, thats it. Well, that didn't work after I cleaned all that crap out of the washer. But running the 1st cycle cold rinse, 2nd cycle add soapnuts, hot/warm, then run 3rd cycle warm/cold works.

This kids butt is just so sensitive. They smelled fine before, but then when she peed they smelled really strong & made her really red & raw, like they needed to be stripped or something. I'm hoping the problem is solved now.

Oh & if you want to use them in cold, just throw them in a few cups of hot water to soak while you fill up the washer & dump the whole thing in. They just kind of need to be primed.

P.S. Soapnut meatloaf was a total bust. I'll try them as cereal!

My experience w/soapnuts: I couldn't figure out why my husband and g/daughter said some towels or clothes smelled sour...until I asked my g/daughter to throw a dress of mine in with a load she was washing. Phew! I had to rewash with baking soda to get the sour smell out. The problem? She overloaded the washer! So don't try for bigger loads than recommended for your washer.

Also, I'm thinking of going back to regular 7th Gen laundry soap just for towels and dishtowels because the saponin from the nuts is causing them to lose their absorbancy. I wonder if that would happen to diapers?

Anyway, just wanted to share.

I have also read that soap nuts do not work very well for diapers. As any gentle soap.
I used the soap nuts for the first time today, seems to clean cloths the same as my homemade detergent, I can still see food on cloths.

I think until we get a water softner I'll keep having a hard time.

What most Website I came accross recommends for diapes is Charlie's Soap.
I have been using All Free and Clear but I know it's not the best. My baby's Eczema is on his face though so he is not reacting to that...
