Play all day- nurse all night

My son is 9 months old. We exclusively coslept until about 7 1/2 months, at that point he began going down in his crib for the first part of the night and then coming to bed after his first night waking- around 12-1.

For the last few weeks he has been too busy and distracted to nurse much during the day. He eats three big meals and a snack (regular table food) and drinks water and some cow's milk out of a cup, so maybe he is just tanked up on that during the day. The problem is he wants to catch up on all of his nursing at night, and the wakings are getting earlier and earlier, last night he was only down for 1 1/2 hours before screaming for the almighty boob.

I have tried the nurse and put him back in bed approach, but it is still every 1-2 hours he is waking to nurse, and by 3am I have just had it.

I would like to begin working towards nightweaning and keeping him in his own bed all night. Hopefully around 12 months, so we have three months to work on it. Any suggestions?

I'm not comfortable with full-on CIO, but have used some controlled crying a few times in the past with very good results. He is a strong willed little guy, and lets you know when the monkeys don't jump fast enough for him LOL.

I'm interested in hearing some ideas on this as well. My son is 11 months old and is the same way, he, unfortunately, is not breastfed, he's on formula, but I can barely get him to take a bottle during the day, he'll eat table food 3 times a day and drink water out of a sippy, but he tanks up on the formula during the night as well.

I've tried not offering the bottle at night and tried to get him back to sleep without it, but he's stubborn and will cry for hours even if I'm holding him to try to put him back to sleep without the bottle. I know he's hungry, but I'm afraid he'll never start drinking more during the day if I don't restrict him at night somehow. I've also tried giving him water instead of formula in a bottle at night but that was a no go.

I can sympathize with you and hopefully someone else will have some ideas!
