Managing massive oversupply

So, DD is 10 days old and I have WAY too much milk! I had this problem with DS as well. With DS, I did not pump except for a few minutes so he could latch well, took lecithin and used cold compresses between feedings. I ended up with plugged ducts, then mastitis. It took a very long time to regulate supply, 6 to 8 weeks. This time around I decided to pump more from the get go, and taper back, I do NOT want to get mastitis with a newby again and I am willing to risk encouraging the milk madness by pumping a bit more.

My milk came in on day 3, by day 5 was again in wild abundance. My breasts are lumpy and sore. I'm taking lecithin and pumping about three times a day, nursing on demand at least every 2 hours during the day, about 3 hours at night, and a big cluster feeding in the evening. I do drain the breast at my evening pumping, it's usually the only time they are ever drained in the day. We block feed, all feedings on one breast for 2 to 3 hours, then switch to the other. I usually pump three times during the day, morning, mid-afternoon and just before bed. Draining the breasts usually at one pumping, sometimes at two, pumping to soft at all three. When I drain the breasts, I'm getting 12 ounces or more! I can easily pump 5 ounces or more and still feel full. DD is showing signs of foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, green stools, gassy, etc. My milk gushes at let down, so we have stop, and I hand express until the flow slows and she can nurse properly

I need help! The only thing that keeps me remotely comfortable is pumping. I'm getting 30 ounces a day, or more, on top of feeding on demand. I'm slowly cutting back on pumping. I haven't been using cabbage or any herbs, I just read on kellymom that sage can help reduce supply.

Oh! And, with DD1 and DS we only successfully nursed on the right. They rejected the left very early on, and when my engorgement went away, the supply dropped. My nipple is shaped differently and the streams of milk look different. I'm currently pumping about 25% less on the left, so the supply is already different, but DD is willing to take it, so I'm still offering!

On the positive side, I already have like 200oz or more in the freezer. DH finds this very amusing. Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

Yeah, in fact my best friend is a LC. I'm trying to seek all possible ideas! Sage is next on my list, I'm going to get some tomorrow.

im dealing with oversupply right now too, so i know how it is

maybe im wrong but i thought draining the breast = telling your body to make more milk? this is why i am not pumping at all this time (i EPed with ds1 and could get 16-20oz easily every 3 hours)

warning - it tastes a bit icky. i ate mine with a spoon of honey.

i was thinking of using pseudoephedrine, but never did. we are 5 months in now and i am still block nursing, but more like 6 h blocks than 10-12 h like at the start. things are much better most days. i have never had mastitis (knock on wood!)

i also 'reset' several times. http://www.internationalbreastfeedin...content/2/1/11

i have read that as many women wean for oversupply as under, but it is often not recognized as such an issue. anyway, btdt and feel for you!

nak again.

That link is FABULOUS PatioGardener!! Just the sort of thing I was looking for, I need a better plan to manage this. With the right breast producing more I'll need to adjust the block feeding to it's like 3 hrs on one side and 6 hrs on the other, as the right breast gets so crazy full. I realized too today, like a "duh" moment. I often offer DD the breast as comfort, when I know she doesn't need it. And although I won't ever restrict her feedings, she'll often suck like twice, milk will let down, and she'll go back to sleep, so I'm making a bigger effort to calm her first, then offer her the breast to limit these extra let-downs with no nursing.

CherryBomb- my problem is that when the milk is in stasis, not flowing, for too long, I'm VERY prone to plugged ducts and mastitis. I can't go too long without emptying. The plan PatioGardenener linked to combines a full drain with block feeding, I know I'll need to full drain more than the once or twice they mention in their case studies to get this managed, but logistically and logically, spacing full drain pumping with block feeding makes sense. I can stop the in between "pumping off" sessions I've been doing, hopefully.

Anyway, this is such a pain, literally I totally believe that moms end up weaning because of it. DD is clearly gassy and fussy from too much foremilk, I'm all swollen, leaky and sore. Too much milk doesn't seem like a problem until you've got days and days, and weeks and weeks of engorgement. Ugh....
