How do you EC when you are out of the house?

6 month old baby boy. We are working out the EC at home. It is kind of bumpy- we catch ay more pees than poops, and we are now trying to transition from holding the baby over the toilet to putting him on a little potty.
At any rate, ds is aware of when he has to poop. I am still trying to figure out his schedule of it- as it is changing since I introduced solids.

At any rate- we stay home a lot. but when we go out I have been pretty much just letting him go in his diaper, because of feeling too overwhelmed to take the time to EC him while out and not having figured out a system.
so the last 2 afternoons, he pooped in his diaper on the car ride home. I was feeling badly about it because I really think he was trying to tell me he had to go.
We have been Ecing since birth and for the poop cue we say poop and also made sort of a poop sounding sound. now ds does the poop sounding sound- and more and more it is around when he is pooping or has to poop, and not other times. So I am thinking that the poop sound is his first word!

Anyway- in the car ride on the way home today he was making that sound a lot. When we got home he had pooped. And I find myself trying to figure out how to handle that- I was out at a friends house and I just knew he had to poop. but I didn't want to hold him over her toilet, plus I doubt he would relax enough.

So do you EC in the car then? how do you do that with a 6 month old?
Thanks for any advice on it

Also- as an aside question- we want to transition ds from being held over the potty to sitting on his potty. We got a nice wooden one recently- a baby potty. But the hole is not big enough that he could sit and pee so I still hold him over the big toilet to pee. Any ideas on how to shift him to the little potty in terms of peeing, or do I just stick with the big toilet?

I keep a potty bowl in the car and always offer before we depart and when we arrive. We have done this since birth. We are lucky in that dd (7 months old) has almost never pooped when out of the home. As for pee, I swear she knows to go before getting in the carseat. I'll usually try to pee her inside before leaving. if she doesn't go and i know she has to, I'll try again in the car in the driveway and more often than not, she'll pee. Even if she just declined to go 2 minutes previously in the house!

As for a potty, I recommend getting a BBLP. A couple, actually, so you can have one that lives in the car. Having the potty in the car has made it very easy for us to ec when out and about. And I find we are often more successful out than at home (probably because I don't set her down in the grocery store and take my attention off her!).

And if you are at someone's house and baby has to go--go in the bathroom and close the door and try! How will they know what you are doing in there? I have a hard time getting dd to go in our toilets (I guess she prefers her potties), but out, she usually surprises me by going in the toilet no problem. Go figure!

HTH--good luck!
