companion plants questions

Thread Starter
Does anyone have any advice about planting veges and/or herbs together?

For instance I have heard to plant dill around potatoes to yeild less potatoe bugs.

Plant tomatos near potatoes because the first grows down, the other up.

Also to plant basil near tomatoes for a hint of the basil taste in your tomatoes.

Anyone know if there is any truth to this, or has tried this?
I am gardening for my fourth year, but it still feels like my first! Every year I learn and try something new.
Thanks, Stacey

Organic gardening, March 1980

Basil near tomatoes,to repel mosquitoes, flies and tomatoe enemies.
Tansy and/yarrow near grapes/raspberry canes to repel japanese beetles.
Nasturtium protects vine crops: cucumber, squash, melon. Repels cucumber beetle, but attracts aphids. Use as a trap crop to protect members of the cabbage family.
Marigolds rid the soil of nematodes.

That's a paraphrase of the article. Hope this helps.

Chamomile and Valerian are supposed to be very good additions to any garden. Don't know why.....

Keep dill away from carrots and onions.
Calendula and pot marigolds are good bad bug repellants.
Lavender to repel cats.

I second the book Carrots Love Tomatoes. It would be really helpful to read about it as there are lots of plants and lots of combos of things that like and dislike being planted together.
