How do you do this collar? -- Making your own patterns

THIS: http://www.shukr.ca/Assets/swatchima...-large_org.jpg

I realize that when you cut the fabric, you have to cut the collar out as part of it. BUT, I already cut out the back piece. I cut flat across the top, and I cut the sleeves out as a part of the body. The piece that I have currently cut out looks like a capital T (with an a-line cut)

(more pics/info here: http://www.shukr.ca/Qaylah-Jilbab-P301C46.aspx#)

So now, all I have left is to cut out the front 2 pieces(left and right) and some other odds and ends(pockets, cuffs, button thingy, etc.)

looking at the seams on the first picture, I think the front edges and collar are separate pieces from the rest of the front panels. I think you'll need to do separate pieces to get things to lfold right and lay right.

if you can, buying a cheap coat from the thrift store with a similar collar and cutting it apart to see the construction. That'd be the easy way.

I think they are separate too. Perhaps the front piece cut with the lapel and fused to a back piece (way too tricky for me without a pattern . . .), but my guess is that it is entirely separated.

really? my MIL though it was probably a part of the front itself.

Ah well, I took a look at a combination of garments, DH's suit(has a way deeper V though, it goes down to right above the belly button I think) and I found dress of mine that has a dress shirt collar. I cut something out, on a whim sort of, I have about a bazillion yards of this fabric, and have contemplated making the whole family outfits out of it,

I was looking at patterns for collars online, but I can't quite figure out how to use a pattern(cause I've never even held one in my hand?). I'm more of the get-a-garment-you-like,-and-copy-it, type of person. So we'll see if I get more time to work on it today, the other day, I actually had it taped up on the wall but DS wanted to play too...

What you want to make is called a notched collar and lapel. The lapel is cut as part of the front of the garment. The collar is cut separately. You sew the shoulder seams first. Sew the two collar pieces together. Then sew the collar to the neck edge and the top of the lapel. Then sew the facings on. Here's a tutorial on it. http://www.wildginger.com/pm2update/...chedCollar.pdf The directions are for a single breasted shirt. Your garment is a double breasted or wrapped opening. So there will be more fabric between the center front and the seam allowance edge.
