We've had success with the rat zapper. We put dog food in it and change out the batteries pretty often.

Our farmhouse had mice shortly after we moved in. We put out traps, live and kill ones and never got anything. They were very bold, would poop on the kitchen floor every night and eat into anything I dared put in the cellar. A couple months later we had 2 cats dropped off in our barn while we were out. We have never seen a hint of mice around here since then and it's been over 2 years. BTW, these are barn cats, they don't even come in the house but still control the mice!
