Decode the cravings thread (everyone can share!)

I thought it might be fun to try to decode our cravings. I know that certain cravings mean your body needs something.

Last night I was craving cheese. Any cheese would do. It wasn't calcium because milk sounded gross and it wasn't protein because meat also sounded gross. It had to be CHEESE.

Oh, I'll play!!

Maybe for you it was a combination of *sodium*, protein and calcium. Is there salt in cheese?? Tastes like it to me with most cheeses.

Here's the one I've been wondering.

What the heck is in white potatoes??? I'm craving them like mad and normally don't even like them.

It was extra sharp cheddar...I'm eating it again today. NOTHING ELSE SOUNDS GOOD!

Potatoes: I have NO idea...but there was a week where I craved big salads and baked potatoes all smothered in cheese and ranch dressing. Starch maybe? My Midwife was just happy I was craving healthy foods

I don't know but I will say this to try to help.

If you crave sugar or carbs a lot, that can mean you have a yeast/candida overgrowth in your body like I have. I learned about it just a few months ago.
Fruit has fructose which candida likes too.

Cheese is a mold and can also make yeast happy. White potatoes are also craved by yeast. Yeast will make your body crave what it wants.

Just thought to warn you in case that could be it.

If you have ever had a lot of antibiotics or BC pills then you probably have yeast overgrowth. There are lots of places to check symptoms online. If you have had a baby with cradle cap, that is due to yeast as well.

I was in love with extra sharp cheddar one day around week 6 - that and roasted red bell peppers. Yum!

Thanks for the tip, DiC. I'm pretty sure I don't have that issue -- potatoes are about the only carb I crave. Actually, sugar and white flour give me a headache these days, especially if not mixed with fat.

Hmm...I did recently get over a really nasty yeast infection...

I found this on Wiki: Casein has been documented to break down in the stomach to produce the peptide casomorphin, an opioid that acts as a histamine releaser

So how do you know where the yeast is? I've been on antibiotics for 5 weeks now and have to continue them until 6 weeks PP (kidney infection). I've been taking probiotics (capsule form because I can't afford the fancy kind) but I've always had cheese and sugar cravings. Would adding more garlic to my diet help get rid of it if I have it somewhere?

Apple cider vinegar is good for curing yeast problems (yes, by drinking it... mothering had a very nice recipe for a pregnancy drink involving apple cider vinegar)

but you want the good stuff... its a good time of year for that. Head to the apple orchards... do not want anything distilled!

potatoes are good sources of potassium as well. mostly in the skin, though.

Oh, yea, I've got to have the skin. Maybe it's potassium.

My craving for weeks has been pumpkin pie - it's the only thing I can eat some days. With whipped cream of course! The extra fibre has been helpful, not sure what else is in there that I might be needing.

The good: This food is low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Iron, Magnesium and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.

so what I got from reading an article wikipedia- maybe you have too much iron in your system (prenatals?) coffee inhibits iron absorbtion. Also they seem to think it has an effect on depression, like coffee decreases it.

I craved coffee like no one's business last time!

Seriously for me right now pumpkin. I second the pumpkin. Could be seasonal though, right?

Ive been craving all my grandmas and mom's recipes. I think its because I miss my family a lot right now.
Other than that Ive been craving Dr. Pepper. I don't drink caffinee (outside of when I get a severe migrane) so I don't know why Im craving Dr. Pepper. It comes and gos as well, maybe Im just overally tired and my body wants a pick me up. It was one of the only things I could keep down the first trimester to so maybe it was that.
