UP/hospital birth

Is anyone planning a hospital birth, but doing their own prenatal care? Just curious.

I understanding Uping and UCing. But I'm a little confused on why you'd want to UP and then choose a hospital birth. Unless you have a care provider who is willing to agree with this... I'm not thinking I'd choose this route.

I say this because if you go in without someone taking your care and knowing you did all your own care you will automatically be assumed as a woman with no prenatal care. So they will want to treat you with antibiotics in labor because your GBS status is unknown. There will also be a 48 hour mandatory stay for baby especially if you don't get antibiotics in labor, because they will want to monitor closely for signs of infections etc since their thinking is you had no prenatal care. Baby's position will also not have been documented so they may or may not want an ultrasound to confirm baby is head down.

The biggest thing for me would be you don't know which care provider your going to get when you get there. It could be with someone who thinks natural birth doens't exist and want to force intervention after intervention on you.

It could all turn out wonderfully as well, but its just something to think about.

Well I just did it on Wednesday . My labor was strange and long but uncomplicated and would have been a perfect UC. But I chose to go to the hospital and everything went smoothly even tho I UPed, and my GD/GBS statuses were unknown.

I'm glad it worked out for you. And congrats to you on your new little one.

But, most of the time you'll be given a harder time with things if you didn't get prenatal care and go to the hospital to birth. So, if someone else is planning a hospital birth, it'd be wise to get some prenatal care anyway.

Yes, I agree. But my mantra for this pregnancy was to "be the change you want to see". There is so much support for homebirth, UC, hospital birth and I suppose with good reason, no support for my choice. Not sure if location has much to do with how wonderfully well I was recieved at hospital with my own prenatal care records (small Canadian hospital) and birth plan. But everyone was so kind to me .

I had a similar experience with my four year old. I did not plan the hospital birth but I had one and it turned out great. I did my own prenatal care and no one batted an eye. They did keep the baby for 48 hours to monitor for GBS which was fine with me since I had declined the test and not gotten the antibiotics. I'd also been in labor for 42 hours before so I mainly slept.

This time I am planning a home birth (not UC) but having back up care from the OBs who use the local hospital because it could streamline the check in process.
