I was wondering how many of you had this problem. I had it with my last pregnancy, which sadly ended in miscarriage shortly after finding out. I had been having strong pregnancy symptoms for a week and took around 6 HPTs including one at my OB's office, and two at the ER, and all of them were negative (even the one I took at the ER the night of my blood test)... I went in the ER for kidney pain and increased cramping in my uterus area, they took a urine blood test and then after begging them to do a blood pregnancy test (to measure my hcg levels) before I would let them do a scan (not a cat scan but the other kind of scan) that they wanted to do... they did the blood test and my levels were 46.6! They were confused as to why the pregnancy wasn't showing up in my urine pregnancy tests they ran because the tests they use measure in at 20..... two days later I went in for another blood test and my levels had dropped to 0.5 and I lost my little bean.
I was wondering if anyone else had this problem of a pregnancy not showing up on HPTs and having to fight to get blood tests done.... did you ever have the problem again? Did that make you stop trusting hpt results?
I have read up on the hook effect (which is one reason why hpt results wont show up correct) and someone else told me that it was because "Its due to a difference in kidney enzymes. Your kidneys break things down to be excreted in your urine, including hormones. Some women don't have the same enzyme or the same level of enzyme that would release the HCG into the urine, therefore YES they would be pregnant and still getting negatives. Some people can go an entire pregnancy and never register HCG in their urine. Kind of like if you were to be measuring... ketones. Some people ALWAYS have ketones in their urine, but most people don't and it would indicate dehydration (dehydration affecting the kidneys get it? kidneys control water balance)."
I am curious because I have had a whole bunch of pregnancy related symptoms since my last "period" (which was very different than what my average normal periods are. My normal periods are heavy and dark red with lots of clots, and this one was very light/spotty and bright red and very watery with hardly any clots).... since my "period" happened a few weeks ago I have had constant on again off again cramping in my uterine area, also, this past week I have been so dead tired I can hardly keep my eyes open through the day, I also have been going to bed earlier and sleeping in later so IDK why I am so tired (I have been getting 9-12 hours of sleep). I cant get comfortable at night anymore... I have an increased sense of smell, and an increased sense of taste (my MIL made chili the other night and I was the only one out of the 4 of us that ate it that noticed the one drop of cyan pepper that she put in it). I have taken a few tests over the past two weeks and they are all negative, but I worry still because with my last pregnancy all my hpts were negative too! I don't know if I should bother trusting them anymore. My body (my kidneys in particular) have been through hell since my second pregnancy... during that pregnancy I developed kidney stones (or that's what they said it was even though they couldn't and still cant when the pain comes on, to confirm diagnose kidney stones).... and I have had 6 more stones happen since the delivery of that daughter in November 2009.
I feel as though I am going crazy.
Anyone else out there in the same boat or have you been in the same boat as me???? I know its a rare thing, but it has happened to me and I am afraid it may be happening again.... or will happen again.
(sorry its so long....)
TIA,
Veronica
