Anyone doing alternative treatments for VUR?

My 3 yr old daughter was recently diagnosed with grade 2 unilateral VUR. We have discussed her treatment options with our doctor (basically, low dose prophylactic antibiotics until the VUR resolves or the Deflux injection or if the VUR does not resolve she would need surgery somewhere down the line). The thing is, doctors outright tell you that they do not know what the effects of long term antibiotic treatment are on these children because the have not done any follow up studies about it. One can add to this that the side effects of antibiotic therapy are scary enough. Is anyone out there gone down a different road instead of the antibiotics or the Deflux? Do you know of any trials that are being done that involve different approaches to the prevention of UTIs?

By VUR you mean reflux?

My dd had this and it was more severe and early. She was having UTIs before one year old and surgery was advised but we put it off.

She actually transitioned off of antibiotics after several months to a daily dose of baking soda in water on the advice of her urologist. Unbelievably it worked! It was a long time before she got another UTI. We also were careful with general diet and high water intake.

She never had surgery. She just turned 16 and still has occasional issues with UTI but we do self-treat with concentrated cranberry and baking soda in capsules. She has taken ABX only twice in the last five years for infections.

Thank you very much for your input!

I have read about the baking soda in water and I´ve actually tried it once. She disliked it very much due to the salty taste.
My daughter is currently on probiotics and cranberry powder. She seems to be doing well. Her last UTI was over two months ago.
Has anyone read about D-Mannose for children?
