Weeds and the portrayal of baby-life

So we love Weeds around here.

I just saw the most recent episode from this last week (I think, it was episode 4 from season 6, we're not in the US and get it a little later). Did anyone notice the reference to CIO~ when Shane had the baby and his new mom "friends" he met in the park, as they were exercising together he said "The modern practice of letting the baby cry it out is cruel and abusive" or something like that! Woo Hoo! Go Shane! He also mentioned to his mom that he needed money b/c all his new mom friends had teething necklaces for their babies!

However, I also noticed how the baby is always in a car seat and all the babies in Shane's little mom group are always in containers. Boo! In general I have been kind of annoyed at how they portray BFing and parenting, as is typical in tv world: the kids are like accesories and take NO effort and require no time and you rarely even see them.

But I guess that's par for the course on tv, so I was happy to see a few good, AP-style things even just mentioned on that last episode.

I love this show and there have been a few positive baby type things in it, breastfeeding etc. However it bugs me to no end that in every episode the baby never cries, Nancy is virtually never seen holding the baby or mothering it in any way, it's like the baby isn't even there. Annoying! I make comments on this issue every time we watch!

I admit to not having seen the new season yet... but Nancy isn't exactly going to win mother of the year anyhow

It always bothers me that babies are never around or crying on tv shows. I just try to tell myself that they legally can't 'work' for very long and getting them to cry on cue would either require hurting them in some way (pinching, scaring) or filming when they are hungry/wet/dirty. I'd rather a perfect image of a baby than a baby who is very hungry or just pinched hehe.

but still... definitely makes it hard to believe when you are younger and childless with no babies around you that babies could EVER possibly be HARD.
