Baby won't burp!

Thread Starter
Hello there
My seven-day old baby seemingly hates to burp and will hardly ever do it. She makes a horrible face during the burping session and as far as I can tell is witholding burps. Sometimes this results in a huge spit-up fit an hour or so after eating (it is more like throwing up, really). I can tell she is gassy; sometimes her little stomach looks swollen.
How can I make my baby burp? I try both the front-fold way where she is sitting, and the over-the-shoulder way. How long are you supposed to burp for if you don't hear anything out of her?
Any and all advice appreciated,
Thank you,
TW

My DD has always been like that since the beginning...most of the time she didn't burp, althought she was gassy, it was a phase...

Have you tried rubbing slowly but firmly upward rather than patting? In the beginning, that is the only way I could burp Cecilia. The sitting bent forward way always worked best with the rubbing for us.

The LLL consultant who came to help out when DD was a few days old assured me that breastfed babies didn't need to be burped. That wasn't my experience, but I thought I'd put it out there...

Maybe you could try lying your baby down on your lap and sitting her back up a few times. This is supposed to help gather the small gas bubbles together to form a bigger one that's easier to burp up.

If she's not burping, she probably doesn't need to or can't. She's way too little to be holding that in on purpose. Newborn bellies often look swollen and babies spit up a lot. I've never regularly burped either of my babies. Sometimes they burp on their own, sometimes they don't. The only time I've ever purposely tried to burp them was when they seemed uncomfortable. If she's not burping, try helping her get it out the other end if she seems uncomfortable (but don't do this right after a feeding). Rub her belly in a clockwise motion, then put her knees up to her chest. That worked like a charm for my younger dd.

I have read that movement helps make the burp happen. We usually walk ds around the room while patting him gently on the back in an upright position hold. Sometimes he burps in a few seconds. Sometimes it can take up to a few minutes. Occasionally he doesn't burp after a feeding but most of the time he does. So- try movement while burping.

It took DS a while to burp, we had to pound his back pretty good and they finally came. Later, his system matured enough that he burped fine.

I unintentionally got him to burp by holding him up in the air some under his arms or around his ribs. The result of his diaphragm/chest being straightened sent the air right out.
