How do you hold a baby boy over an adult-sized toilet?

We're accidental ECers -- we stumbled into it because it makes DS happy and he's easy to EC. We do it at home with DD's little potties, but rarely out. One of the reasons is that I can't figure out how to hold him over a big toilet! He either ends up dangling his bottom in there or aiming up and out.

How in the world do you make this work?!

you know, i have no idea.

since he was a newborn, really, i just did it. put him in a sort of squat position, with his back against my upper arms and torso (elbows tucked in close to my body), and that was that.

we never used little potties. we did use the sink quite a bit until he started on food.

I sit on the toilet (when she was little I faced the tank and when she got bigger I faced normal) and hold her back against my belly and my hands under her thighs this way I can stay as long as she needs and I don't get tired.

i always sat my ds on the edge of the seat and then hold his back/arm with one hand and hold/point his penis with the other or else i would be covered in pee.
the only way i got the hang of it was not to use the potty for a few days. so much easier at home for learning. there is no fears of making a mess and much easier for changing clothing.

Even now that he can sit on there with no help, I'll sometimes hold him over, especially in a gross bathroom.

I hold him with his back to my front, hands under his thighs, and this brings his bottom below the bunch of clothes at his ankles so they don't get sprayed. What works for my sore back is to bend my knees slightly and lean over so my elbows rest on my thighs - a shallow knee bend, I guess. It's odd looking I think, but it always makes me feel successful at helping him while keeping him clean. And I'm comfortable enough to hold out like that if it turns into a poop by surprise.

As an infant and smaller baby, I think I just sat backward, but there was always a lot of spray and not enough space.
