abnormal pap protocol

Hey ladies,

Anyone know if this is normal procedure? I had a pap about 10 weeks pp and it came back abnormal. My mw wanted to redo in 3 to 4 months, but I requested that we redo in 2 months due to a family history of cancer (not strong, but still...). Anyway, she wants me to take some prescription strength anti-yeast meds a month before the redo just in case it's an infection causing the abnormality. However, she said she didn't notice any abnormal appearance/discharge/scent when she did the pap, nor was there any testing done for an infection. What do you all think?

I'm confused.

It depends what abnrmality was found. Ask her the exact phrasing of the cytology report and then I can probably help you.

The PP might know more than me. But I can tell you my story.

In 2000, I had an abnormal pap. i can't remember at this point the exact phrasing of the report. I think it was called dysplasia. The OB/Gyn took a look w/ colposcopy and she saw something 'white'. So she biopsied. The biopsy results were fine. however, she said b/c I had squirmed during the procedure, she wanted to take it further. I called my family dr b/c this was a bit iffy to me. He was not happy w/ her b/c she had filled out paperwork on me (a general list of yes/no Qs on the patients). One Q was whether or not patient was depressed. She said 'no'. He wanted to know whether she'd asked me this Q b/c he was actually treating me for depression. he felt she just circled yes/no on the questionaire to get her reimbursement from the insurance company.

So he felt that we could repeat the paps every 3 mos for 1 year and then go back to regular yearly paps. All my paps since that time have been normal. And when subsequent ob/gyn's have asked me about the issue - they have not had issues with me having had the every 3 mo followups. Furthermore, I have told Gyns and midwifes that we had had intercourse with spermicide/condom less than 48 hrs before, and quite a few have agreed that this could have cause the bad result.

Thanks for the replies. I can't remember the exact phrasing of the results -- it was "something-something of unknown significance". I wrote it down at the time and googled it and I know at the time I wasn't overly concerned. But now that the repeat is coming up in a few weeks, I'm suddenly nervous. It's probably nothing, but I hate paps, so the thought of the repeat coupled with the possibility of more invasive tests down the line just completely freaks me out. Blech. Anyway, thanks for responding. I'll post again if I have any more significant info. Thanks!
