please bear with me- need rec's for a teach yourself sewing book

Thread Starter
i am sure that this comes up ALL the time in this forum, so i apologize and plan to search the threads.
but, i was wondering what your favorite teach yourself sewing book is?

i would like to eventually sew quilts and clothes for my kids, but am HAPPY to just start with tableclothes and napkins for beginners!

i need a really basic book, even telling me what each part on the machine is and what it is for.

thanks,
rachel

I used youtube videos or would google "______ sewing tutorial" (in the blank put in whatever you are trying to make)

I had to learn how to thread and troubleshoot my machine by myself and it seemed impossible at first but it really is simple once you get the hang of it. My favorite books are Bend the Rules Sewing by Amy Karol (GREAT intro part to help you learn the correct ways to accomplish almost any sewing project) and an oldie but a goodie - the Reader's Digest Guide to Sewing! I found an old, old copy on Amazon for $3!! It has ALL the info you could ever want. Lotta Jansdotter also has some great beginners books.

Happy Sewing!

The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing by Singer. I photos.

I tried Sewing for Dummies but that didn't help so much. I ended up learning from blogs, by searching for "tutorial" plus whatever item I wanted to make. I still learn a lot from blogs. For quilting, videos are much better than print instructions!

I see that this is an older thread, but recently came across this book and loved it: SEW: sew everything workshop. It's a great beginners book and it even has patterns! thumb.gif
