Yesterday, DS came home from school with a scratch on his knee, it was surrounded by a red area and DS was acting like it itched. I'm not sure if the redness and itch came first, so DS scratched it;or if the redness was the start of an infection from the scratch. It didn't look too bad yesterday, and I was leaning towards bug bite, so I just offered to put some soap on it to help with the itching. DS declined the offer of soap (my usual itch treatment.)
Today, it looks much worse. I now really think it is a bit infected. Though it's hard to be 100% sure since he scratched it up a fair amount more. It is very very red and a bit crusty.
I'm not sure what to do with it. I can't put typical OTC treatments like neosporine on it, b/c anything with petroleum products (Vaseline, petrolatum, mineral oil, etc) triggers his eczema. I'm pretty sure that an eczema out break and infection at the same time would be bad. he also is allergic to penicillin, amoxycillin, and and all the other 'cillins.
I gave it a cleaning with hydrogen-peroxide, but I'm not sure what to put on it. In the house, I have tea tree oil some where, and lavender oil. I have honey and garlic, but I don't know how would get it to stay on his knee. If there is a brand of antibiotic cream similar to neosporin, but in a natural base that won't trigger his eczema I could make a trip to Whole Foods or CVS.
Of course it's the weekend, so if things get real bad tomorrow we end up in the ER, not our regular pediatrician that knows him (last time we ended up at the ER he got the amoxycillin that caused an allergic reaction.)
TIA
