Another question about blankets...

I'm due in January. My son will be in a sidecar crib. My apartment gets REALLY COLD at night in the winter. It's an old apartment building, and the landlord keeps the heat at the legal minimum, which is 55 at night. I do not have alot of money to spend on clothes, etc for this baby, so I don't know if I can afford sleep sacks or lots of clothes to layer. At this point, my sister has some unisex 0-6 months clothes, from her twin daughters, but what I can manage to get after that is still up in the air. Obviously, that's not an option for the newborn. Is there a way to make regular blankets ("throw" sized or toddler sized) safe, or turn them into sleep sacks without cutting them up? My older son and I sleep under down comforters, out of necessity, even my dogs will sometimes find a way to get under the blankets, so I can't imagine anyone comfortable enough sleeping swaddled in just a receiving blanket or two. (And a space heater is out of the question- we're two twin beds and now a crib in a very small bedroom, literally only walking space, so a space heater would be a safety hazard.) Suggestions?

I personally would go with a sleep sack with a sleeper under it. as long as you're careful during night-time feedings you would only need one. you can also swaddle with a heavier baby blanket. either way your middle of the night diaper changes are going to be an ordeal.

my newborn is currently swaddled in a toddler size blanket. i find its safe because it can wrap around a few times and seriously will not come loose, at least for a few months when LO doesnt wiggle out of things yet

eta: when we have the air on (making the house *really* cold, so its almost like your situation, except you have no choice lol) i swaddle LO with a nice big blanket and leave LO in only a diaper, no clothes, because as PP mention, your diaper changes are going to suck. its the worst to have to take off those layers for multiple diaper changes in the middle of the night
