So, we've just set up a sweet sidecar crib situation for our baby (due to arrive any day now) and we're having some gap issues... here's the skinny:
We have a pillow top mattress. Someone lent us an AMAZING organic latex crib mattress (it's pretty squishy). We've added extra foam to the outside of the crib mattresses (to fill the gap), and it's about as tight as it could get... but, because both our mattress and the crib mattress are pretty fluffy, there is still a little crevasse between the two that neither myself or my husband are comfortable with.
Here's what I'm thinking - I just went to the thrift store and bought another fitted sheet and I'm going to try to sew the crib sheet and our bed sheet together so that there is no possible way for the baby to slip down in there.
Has anyone else tried this? What worked best? I'm concerned about the seam giving way, so I'm thinking about splaying out the edges of both sheets and then sewing those together so that it's double thickness and the seams are not right down the crevasse... what do you think? Thought this might make changing the sheets easier too boot!

we had a teeny tiny crevasse that i was fine with, and nothing ever happened. it was annoying to try and squish the bed sheets inbetween the mattresses though, your idea sounds appealing
