Cleft Lip and Palate

Thread Starter
Just thought I'd say hello again...
My DS was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate in Feb. 08. He's had both repaired and has dealt with some other issues stemming from the clefts. Does anyone else have a child with a similar issue? (I hate the word, defect.)
I'd be happy to talk with any new mamas about what to expect...

Love my (formerly) wide-smile boy.

Hi mama! Glad to hear you ds is doing so well!

My palate guy is 3.5 now. He does not have a traditional cleft, though. He had a lip tie (five labial frenulums that completely attached his lip to his gumline) his hard palate is high and arched, but intact. His soft palate has some markers for a submucous cleft, but we're still not positive. And he had velopharyngeal insufficiency with swallow for the first 2 years, but that appears to have resolved now.

We expected VPI with speech, but it doesn't appear to be happening. Instead we're dealing with Apraxia. THere were lots of oral motor issues initially, but I think he's overcome the hypotonia well enough (although he still drools a ton)

Hi mommas, dealing with my 2 1/2 month old with his first runny nose. So different with no palate. He's been coughing, chocking, gagging all morning. I so worried, i feel like a first time mom again, and im usually not a worry-wort at all. Cant wait for my little guys surgery in April.
How did your littleones handle the first few weeks after surgery?

May i ask what other issues? My boy has Pierre Robin. He also has a non-decended left testicle and some weird skin leasions on his left hip. Specialist doesnt want to see him until after the genetic work up, which is in Nov. Kind of curious what it all might mean?!
