that after 5 years, my husband and I are out of credit card debt!

We had three credt cards, and after 2 years of minimal income, moving out of state, back into state after grad school, a wedding, and goodness knows what else, we had $27,000 of debt.

And now we're out of that hole. Now if we could just get full time jobs, we could think about buying a house!

congratulations!!!!! what a huge accomplishment! Isn't is so freeing? I just paid off all my credit card debt and am debt-free for the first time in my life. It's been a few months now and the feeling is just so amazing. I can't see myself ever carrying a balance again.

way to go! I know it can be hard, I had $29K in debt a few years ago, and now all my debt is gone too and never to return!
Great job on getting that stress out of your life!

What we did:

Honestly, the first year or so we came back, we were seriously behind on everything because we just couldn't afford the payments. So finally, Dh called up each one, and they gave him ecellent rates. The Discover had an 8% interest, and the VISA and MC had something each between 2-3% for a 5 year plan to pay it off. The Discover card's rate was going to only last a year, at which point it would return to 29.5% interest. Ack! By the time that that had happened, I was gifted a chunk of change, and we made the executive decision to just pay it off. That left the Visa and MC. Between the two of them, we were paying $500 a month, and we split them so we paid the minimum on the lower interest rate card, and the remainder of the $500 on the higher interest rate card, so it ended up being like $330/$170 for each. Then when the second card was done with, we put $500 a month on the last card, until this last month, which was $321. So a 5 year plan took us3 1/2 years because we never paid JUST the minimum, and we had lucked out on getting that money toward the beginning.

I think Dave Ramsey advocates something like this, right? I've never read all of his stuff because he's too Christian-oriented for me, but the actual nitty-gritty seems sound enough.
