No Prenatal Care Until Wk 10-12?? - Page 3

For my first, I went to an OB at 6w6d for my first appt., with an ultrasound "for dating purposes." That ended up being helpful because I was rear-ended on the way home, and it served as proof that I was pregnant. (The baby is now 4yo btw so everything was fine; but being pg totally changed how our claim was handled at the time.)

For my second, I went to a midwife at 12 weeks, who believed me and my picture-perfect chart.

I agree that later is normal and that it makes sense to wait. Though for excited first-timers, I think it would be neat if you could get an office/nurse visit (no u/s or blood tests) where they can answer the questions that pop in your mind once you realize there's a baby on board.

I had my first appointment at 12w. I could do it earlier (say 8w), but I didn't see the point.

Yeah. The OBs here make the 1st one around 12 weeks as do all midwives I've personally known. With my 1st dd I got lucky and got a spot asap because they'd just opened the practice and with the 2nd I asked to be seen early because of severe pregnancy nausea in pg #1. I plan to do the same this time. In fact that reminds me to get on the phone right now!

I like the sound of 15 weeks. I agree...there's no point in going in so early. With DD I went in around 8w I think. About the same with DS, but I changed from an OB to a MW around 15 or so weeks. With this one...I've BTDT and there's nothing they can tell me that I dont already know. If I have a MC, there's nothing they can do anyways. I wont be getting any testing to see about defects...there's nothing we can do about it anyways and I'd rather not worry about my baby possibly having downs or something the entire pg. I am 11w1d today and I probably wont call for a couple more weeks. The only thing I want to hear right now is the HB, but I am trusting in God that everything is A-OK!

Really the only thing I can think of that would be better going in at 8 weeks instead of 12 (barring complications such as bleeding or abdominal pain) would be iron levels. Blood volume changes pretty quickly and while my iron was normal I would have really appreciated knowing to start supplements before anemia symptoms became more severe. If you've already been taking a prenatal with a good amount of iron in it (mine lists 167% of the daily recommended amount) though then you could probably just stay on that and wait.

My appointment with the CNM is scheduled for 8 weeks from my LMP, so i guess that's early, but i was still like, "what do i do in the meantime?" the reply was "take prenatal vitamins." I know I'm not the first woman to ever give birth, but i still like to be reassured by professionals. I called up my doula friend (too far away to be my doula) and she gave me some good advice.

Yup, totally normal not to be seen before 12 weeks in my area. With my first I was seen at 12 weeks. The second I got PG and scheduled for 12 weeks but lost the baby at 8 weeks and they told me to keep the appt anyway since I was due for my yearly. I got PG directly after the MC so when I went to my yearly appt. it ended up being a prenatal appt. I would normally not have been seen that early though.

I use a midwife and she usually do the appts around 12 weeks also. With my first she did at 8/10 weeks I guess because it was my first. With this one(my 3rd) I went in at 16 weeks.

For all 3 of my pregnancies my first acutal doctors appointment wasn't until after 10 weeks. DD1 I had an intake appointment (set up record, get history.. it was with a nurse) at around 9 weeks, first appointment was a little past 12. With the second i had the intake around 6ish weeks becuase i was leaving for an extended vacation, my first appointment with a doctor was around 16ish. This time first time I saw the nurse for the intake was around 11, first appointment was around 12 (they got me in quick because I wasn't sure of my dates). Typically they like to see you for your first appointment between 11-13 weeks here.

With DS & the babe I'm carrying now (need to update my siggy), I had my first appointment at 10 weeks. I think that's still kinda early. With this babe especially, they had a hard time finding the hb which kinda freaked me out. I'm going to wait a little longer next time, I think.

Depending on the situation, there are other great reasons to see a doc early (such as when you are not in a committed relationship with the baby's father and are worried about things such as STD's, HIV etc and want testing.) My midwife handled the situation with much more care and concern than a medical doctor at a walk-in clinic would have (speaking from the experience of my first pregnancy to my current one), such as offering alternative ways of testing that are not invasive and less likely to cause bleeding and possible miscarriage.
I'm sure there are many other reasons also, but perhaps the person doing the client intakes could ask questions and see when the mother would prefer her first appointment to be.

I have had prenatal care in three countries and none of them started before 12 weeks unless there were problems or other indications.
