For my first, I went to an OB at 6w6d for my first appt., with an ultrasound "for dating purposes." That ended up being helpful because I was rear-ended on the way home, and it served as proof that I was pregnant. (The baby is now 4yo btw so everything was fine; but being pg totally changed how our claim was handled at the time.)
For my second, I went to a midwife at 12 weeks, who believed me and my picture-perfect chart.
I agree that later is normal and that it makes sense to wait. Though for excited first-timers, I think it would be neat if you could get an office/nurse visit (no u/s or blood tests) where they can answer the questions that pop in your mind once you realize there's a baby on board.

(such as when you are not in a committed relationship with the baby's father and are worried about things such as STD's, HIV etc and want testing.) My midwife handled the situation with much more care and concern than a medical doctor at a walk-in clinic would have (speaking from the experience of my first pregnancy to my current one), such as offering alternative ways of testing that are not invasive and less likely to cause bleeding and possible miscarriage.
