Soaker layers

It's been a couple of years since I've made any diapers, and those were mostly mediums. Now I'm putting together a newborn stash for #5, and I'm trying to use up the fabrics I have on hand before buying any new. But I'm really not sure what the "best" number of soaker layers for each fabric is when it comes to newborns. (I just loaded the suckers up for my mediums, lol, but I don't want newborns to be overly bulky when not needed.)

I have some:

microfiber
hemp terry
flannel
and basic knit cotton

I typically do a microfleece inner with a full layer of terry for a hidden soaker, then miscellaneous outters. I don't really do layed-in soakers b/c they tend to go missing around here.

Suggested layers for smalls would be great, too, since I've never done many of those!

I have mostly flannel pockets for all our diapers. At the newborn age we did two layers of flannel for the actual diaper and then a soaker of two layers of flannel and one layer of zorb. Other times I stuffed with one microfiber towel - so 3 layers of that.

Small, well pretty much the same as newborn because the same diapers fit her. We have some chamois I cut up and sewed into 3 layers. Sometimes I'd add one of those in.

I'm probably not much help because I have no idea how those would dry stuff inside of a diaper.

I do have some bamboo - 3 layers that also worked well for a tiny baby. I'm not sure how that compares to hemp.

It really depends on how the kid pees though. DS was able to wear newborn diapers, 2 body layers of flannel, 1 soaker layer of flannel, and one soaker layer of natural cotton batting. DD would completely soak those through. DS peed a little bit all the time and DD opened the floodgates and peed less often but lots more at once. She leaked out of the diapers DS was fine in.
