Update on feeding problem with now 10 month old DD

A while ago, I posted a thread on my DD being unable to swallow table food or even pureed food here http://www.mothering.com/discussions...ight=month+old.
Anyway, some people from EI came and did an evaluation and today an occupational therapist came over to see if there were anything she could show us that would be helpful.

DD is now 10 months old and when the initial EI people did the eval., they suggested a vibrating teether and maybe spicy foods.
So, we did that and a few days ago, she actually swallowed soup without choking! It was very spicy, Indian food and I thought well, we might as well try it and she loved it!
She ate a few spoonfuls and then the next day had some pureed, very spicy/hot guacamole and ate a few spoonfuls. It was great and she was so excited, I think because she actually was able to eat it!

his morning, the OT came and I told her how she did the past few days and she had some more suggestions. she gave us a spoon with teething ring textures on the end and told me that putting the food on there and having her feel that, might help stimulate the swallow reflex to happen quickly enough that she won't choke when the food goes to the back of her throat.
Also, we could try having her use the vibrating teether before her food.

She tried giving DD some small pieces of food, but she didn't swallow them, she just choked on it.

It was really informative and it will be interesting to see what happens using these techniques. DD was so excited, I think she's been very frustrated because she really wants to eat and likes the taste of different foods.

I know there were a couple people who were having the same kind of issue so I just wanted to post and let you know how it went.

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear things are going well!

DS is still throwing up every time food hits the back of his throat. The good news is that he was willing to put a few crumbs of bread in his mouth, whereas before he didn't even want to do that.

We're giving him a few days break before trying again.
