Cosleeping with Toddler and Newborn?

I'm newly pregnant and love cosleeping with our 2.5 year old. He'll have just turned 3 when the new baby arrives. I'm really curious to know how other people have managed this situation. My family says the new baby will be crying all the time and wake up our toddler so he should transition to sleeping in his own room. Maybe they are right, but I don't want to look across the bed and not see him sprawled out, or not feel his fuzzy head bump into my side during the night, etc. I would miss him! At the same time, I've read it is unsafe for a newborn and toddler to share a bed. I need advice. Surely some of you can explain how this works!

I personally transitioned my toddler to her own room, but it's because she's been waking everyone up (laying on me, kicking her dad) and no one was sleeping well.
when I was born my 2.5 year old sister was still cosleeping, so I was in a sidecar. the big thing is making sure that an adult is in between the two so the toddle cannot roll onto the baby in the middle of the night.
