Pre-fold and cover questions.

My LO is 2 months old and weighs 13 lbs. 9 oz (25 inches long). At 1 month she weighed 9 lbs 12 oz and 7 lbs 5 oz at birth. So she is gaining very fast. Because she is breastfed I know that her weight gain will slow down (otherwise I'll have a 60 pound 1 year old!).

Right now I am using yellow edge GMD pre-folds, and they fit great (I use a snappi and Thirsties V2 covers). I used the orange edge until about 5 weeks old and that was pushing it. GMD states that their yellow edge work until 15 pounds (the age range is 5-6 months). So, should I purchase the red edge (next size up) or skip to the brown edge? Looking back I wouldn't have started with the orange edge...if she outgrows the yellows soon I'll have purchased 6 dozen pre-folds (3 dozen of each size) to diaper a baby for 3 months!

For covers, she still fits the Thirsties V2 size XS, and I have one in size S that also fits. How much bigger is the medium cover? Has anyone gone from the XS to medium? Or how long have you used size small? As I'm using the XS just fine on a 13+ lb. baby I figure that the other sizes might also have a larger size range than stated. I have some size med. proraps that I got second hand but they are huge still (the lower weight range on those is 13 lbs.)

I'm not against spending the money for necessary diapers, but if I can get by with less it would be nice.

I'm not sure about covers (the only PUL I use are thirsties duos size two and an old thirsties medium... havent used PUL otherwise since smaller.. although the medium still fits my kid) but I'd just go ahead and get brown edge prefolds. My kiddo still fits PERFECTLY in her red edge pf's at 18 months and 25ish pounds but I know a lot of people skip red. Folding over the rise isn't hard and brown will get you further in the long run. Saving money is always nice

As for the orange edge... they will make good doublers when your kiddo gets older and needs more than just one prefold to hold a single pee so don't feel so silly for not skipping straight to yellow.

As far as that fast early growth -- don't be too worried. My DD2 was a big baby, 20 lbs by 6mo, and now at 2.5 yo she still fits medium covers and could wear the prefold that DD3 has been wearing since she was 4mo. I bought the XL Thirsties covers when she was 6mo thinking she'd grow into them super-fast, and they're still huge on her... those BF'ed babies definitely have a different growth curve!

I don't think that skipping the red edge is very comfy for baby. You would have to practically fold the browns in half to get them to fit a 15lb baby. My kid is still in the red edge at almost 15 months (and 25+lbs), and they still fit great. You can probably get by with two dozen rather than three if you can do laundry every other day. Maybe with that in mind you can get two dozen of the red edge and one of the brown just to check them out.

As far as covers we have gotten the best use out of our Mommy's Touch covers. They are an adjustable all-one-size cover that really has worked for all sizes except newborn. My kid has been wearing them for over a year and they still look/work/fit/wash great. I really love them. I would recommend the snaps as they will last longer.

I only ever had yellow edged and brown edged... it worked REALLY well for us. Yeah, we had a bit folded down in front of the browns but really? No big deal... I couldn't justify spending money we didn't have.

FWIW, for the 6 weeks to 6 months period, I've been using Little Lions capri (seconds and second hand), little lions regular (4x6x4 -- they fold down without as much bulk as 4x8x4 thickness) and GMD red-edged seconds (I didn't intend to get the GMD prefolds, but I made an impulse buy when they came available as seconds). DS is about 18 lbs. and 6 months old, and the capri are getting a little harder to snappi and aren't providing quite enough absorbency anymore. At this point, I'm preferring the regular and red-edged ones. He'll grow out of the regular by width before outgrowing the red-edged ones, but they'll be able to be used for daytime or with a doubler for night-time for a long time, especially if I trifold instead of trying to snappi (where the width becomes an issue -- they're narrower and longer than the red-edged size).

In your shoes, I'd seriously consider buying 2-3 dozen of the regular 4x6x4 prefolds (seconds) from little-lions right now. They're only $15.50/dozen, and they'll be trimmer than the brown GMD prefolds. Maybe get one dozen of the brown-edged ones too, and order more when they seem to fit better? The brown-edged ones could temporarily be your nighttime diapers, since they're bulkier and more absorbent.

Our size small thirsties still fits, and I think it has since he was about two months old? It's a little low-rise, but not too bad. I kind of have to tuck our red-edged Gmd prefolds in in the back so that they don't stick out (they otherwise don't require folding down). He's too big for size one Thirsties Duos, though.

i would wait till the diapers and/or covers are getting too small.

my dd is 8m and still fits great in gmd yellow. i'll post back on thursday on her weight, probably around 19lbs. dd has fit great in the yellows since she was 2m. while she does have normal baby tummy chub, it seems like she only gains chub in her thighs. while i have also debated going to red or brown. i'm waiting. especially now at 8m when lo get much more active and weight gain slows.

i did the same with cover. i use motherease airflow. once i found the largest setting getting snug i ordered more. most stuff ships so quickly i haven't had a problem.

Thirsties mediums are kind of big IMO. DD at almost 17lbs fits a Thirsties small. The medium works, but it is a little big. The size 1 duo is too small. We don't have any size 2 duos.
