I am pumping for a preemie in the nicu, born 5 weeks ago, and nursing my almost-3-year-old a few times a day. I have a pretty large capacity, and was over-producing some, so I cut back my schedule from 8x/day to 5-6x/day about 2 weeks ago. Also, I had a pump crisis 3 days ago and went 2 days with inadequate power to my pump (lost the voltage converter/power cord) which has cut back my production to about my target level, but I'm nervous that it will drop further. I didn't pump at all for DD, so all of this production-tracking is new to me.
Anyway, my right side lets down pretty well, but my left takes ages. Just now (and this is typical) I pumped for half an hour and got 125 ml on the right and 40 ml on the left. I unhooked the right and continued just on the left for about 10-12 more minutes, and wound up with 35 ml more after that, for a total of 75 ml on the left.
What's up with the sudden flow increase after half an hour? Sometimes it's after 20 minutes, but always long after the right side gets going. Is there anything (besides massage/compression, which I'm doing) that I can do to speed up flow on the left?
Thanks!
