Mucus in BF 7 week old's diaper

Hi all, I'm new here

My 7 week old is EBF and mucus started showing up in his diaper 6 days ago. Every poopy diaper since then has been very mucusy. He has been fussy and pulling off the breast lately too, although could this be related to a growth spurt? I took him to the pedi 2 days ago and they tested for blood, which was negative. He mentioned milk protein allergy and bacterial infection and to call back if it persists until tomorrow. He also mentioned formula and I expressed to him that I am very adamant about BFing. He lost a pound of his birthweight the first 5 days and we have come so far with BFing. He is now 11.5 pounds. Does anyone have any experience, insight? I'm really worried.TIA.

ps. I am lactose intolerant as well as DS grandfather. Also, does the mucus cause malabsorption? Oh, and I was on fenugreek but stopped about a week and a half ago. I also eat oatmeal everyday and eat almonds pretty regularly.

Welcome! Dairy is a very common allergen for babies, and especially since you have a family history of dairy problems. Have you tried removing all dairy from your diet?

I have a blog (click on my user name, then home page) with a lot of basic allergy/intolerance info, and what symptoms to watch for in babies. Also, how to do an elimination diet and keep a food journal.

Hi, my DS had terrible mucous which got worse and worse. Pedis/docs kept telling me it was normal. It took me 4 months of trial and error, researching, taking advice from alternative practitioners, etc (also bc DS had tons of other troubles, such as GERD and severe colic). I also got loads of help here from the lovely mamas. This may not be the same for everyone but for us, the moment I cut out all grains, the mucous practically disappeared. Of course it could be totally different for you. Now I'm at a place where I am eating a diet that keeps DS at baseline, I can see what foods are affecting him when I try them out and the mucous will come and go to certain degrees depending on how we go. I wish you guys the best of luck xxx
